TLDR; Great JRPG / visual novel with a dark story and great foreshadowing if you pay attention. Would recommend if you enjoy a dark twist in stories.

STORY
The story follows Shina who awakes from a gruesome dream of her own death with no memory of where or who she is. As she starts to remember her past she forms a group of friends to battle against a growing corruption plaguing the world. Arata assists her in her journey but the more Arata learns about Shina's situation the darker the world around them becomes.

Note: Spoiler below is a fun little gag played throughout the game:
The world is bugged (video game bugs) and some of the characters have bugs too

Note: Spoiler below is a major part of the story later on and I had fun with the surprise so read at own risk:
The story also explores what might happen if someone is deprived of an emotion but what that is makes sense later in the story.

CHARACTERS

There are many characters in this game and I'm only going to depict the main characters in the way I view each of them

Shina Ninomiya is the main heroine of this story. She is doing everything she can to survive but doesn't let things drag her down. She is also great in spotting Arata's distress and attempts to support him even though her situation is grave. Quirk: Spider

Arata Mizunashi is a programmer who is doing everything he can to assist his former coworker Shina. He is the main character in the VN element and is doing his best to save Shina. Quirk: Bear

Lily Hopes a princess who turns into a queen when her father dies to the corruption attacking her country. She sets off with Shina on the quest to put an end to this mysterious corruption. She seems to always take a calm and intentional look at her situation. Quirk: Bee

Lucil Filarte is a half-elf riding a floating chair. She is the quiet type and doesn't show her emotions very often. Being a half-elf, however, has put her in a sticky situation as she struggles for recognition in her village as she is a half-elf. She doesn't seem to be too bothered by this fact but looks can be deceiving in this game. Quirk: Fly

AL Astra is a young girl looking for an adventure and her parents. She is found by Shina when she collapsed from exhaustion as she doesn't know how to prepare for an adventure. She is a happy little girl often being teased by other characters for her own inexperience but keeps a positive energy throughout the game. Quirk: Centipede

Clea Glave is an infamous peddler who joins the group by attempting to trap them in one of her schemes but ends up being a very reliable ally. She doesn't know when to stop being a peddler and is always looking for things to make a quick buck off of. Her knowledge of ancient artifacts and locations help the group improve their chances of survival. Quirk: Praying Mantis

Celica Clayton is the famous adventurer the Monarch Adventurer. She is skilled in combat and her light-hearted humor keeps the party in high spirits. She is on an adventure that so happens to line up with Shina's goal and thus Celica decides to join the crew. Quirk: Butterfly

There are other side characters that have help the main characters out but these are the playable characters

GAMEPLAY
It is a mix of JRPG and VN elements throughout the game where certain areas in the JRPG aren't accessible until you do the VN part. The choices you make in either part affect how the story progresses. Certain choices would lead you to a death end where you would be forced to load the last save to continue... so save often. The combat mechanics are fun where I've found myself planning out a fight to use the game's knock-back feature to make enemies bounce off each other. As I learned each playable characters' strengths and weaknesses I learned how to "exploit" the games mechanics to my advantage.

THE GOOD AND THE BAD
No stepdad here

Let's start with the bad:
The only real issue I had with this game is that when I first started the game, the opening cutscene had fewer fps than a slideshow, but after I followed a guide explaining how to fix this issue it was a solid 60 fps throughout the game except when loading into a new area.

The good:
If you like a dark story with graphic depictions of death as the characters desperately fight against monsters that want to destroy the world, you will enjoy this game as I have. The characters all have their own little quirk that makes them lovable. If you pay attention to the story you can pick up on foreshadowing... but usually only after all the pieces fall together (at least I did). The story builds up to show off a mysterious force that is pulling the strings of fate then the characters have to deal with these forces. If you pay attention to the story, you can start to piece things together before the characters do.

CONCLUSION
I enjoy these kinds of games that have a psychological horror twist. The battle mechanics are fun to play with and grinding doesn't feel like a chore. A few times I did get annoyed with enemies in my way but if you know how to avoid combat in JRPG games it isn't much of a problem. The final ending I got at the time of writing this review was the Normal Ending which explains the name. I want to know what death ends I missed there is an in-game way to find out and explore these endings. you get items/money if you get certain endings I also like the use of music to set the tone of the events and even sometimes the absence of music sets the tone to a darker or more serious mood.

I'd rate this game at a solid 9.5/10 overall
