Early Access Review
TL;DR
There's literally no reason to NOT try this game. Free-to-play, Crossplay, and has a solid foundation. Some aspects aren't as great (Lootbox-based "free" cosmetic progression, no "genuine" loop outside just skating around and doing generic missions or completing tutorial-esque stuff, artstyle is hit-or-miss), but don't listen to the people that just say they want Skate 3 back. It's not as nearly as good as they'd lead you to believe. I should know, I'm actively playing it while I play this game!

------

Comparing to Skate 3

First thing's first: As a skateboarding fan, this game is great, and forming opinions based on comparing it to Skate 3 is a huge mistake.

There is validity in that it doesn't have every feature Skate 3 had, specifically Hall of Meat and a few tricks, but there's tons of stuff it has that Skate 3 couldn't even dream of. (Also, Skate 3 is almost 15 years old at this point)

The artstyle is controversial, but frankly, go back and look at characters in Skate 3. It's a very ugly game!

This artstyle works a bit better to me anyways - THPS has a much higher budget and can roll with the realistic aesthetic, so I think making this one a bit more cartoony works well, especially since it can get way goofier with how freeform everything is, between the upper body emotes while skating, the flopping around, and leaning into the "goofy bug" aspect. Give us more body modification please - a few more haircuts (long hair with bangs would be nice), and splicing separate bodypart sizes instead of "Masculine/Feminine skinny/muscular/fat".

Gameplay

In terms of gameplay, honestly? it's GREAT. Going back to Skate 3 is like night and day - Controlling the flicks here feels sooo much better, and there are so many QOL/accessibility features, that I really feel like you have no reason to go back to Skate 3 unless you want that spcecific experience again.

The only issue I have is that there's no way to modify the "deadzone", to make manualing a bit easier, and I would love to have full re-bind, but for now, it works, and I'll be happy to mess with the settings until I find the right amount of "assistance" for me.

The sandbox additions, like all the fun semi-parkour movement options, and leaning into the goofier aspect of doing thigns like rolling around instead of skating, gives the game a personality that can make it more fun for people who aren't as into skateboarding - Just find large ledges and jump off, or do emotes while cars run you over! (Please bring back punching/throwing your board though)

Current personal Cons
The lootbox system for the "free" progression is outright garbage. Get rid of it. Replace the system with buying the items using the points you accrue, instead of using RNG rolls. It would also give the unique in-world stores a reason to exist beyond decoration, since you could just have them be... actual stores!

The microtransaction Rotation stuff is gross too. Don't like it, but it's a compromise, and frankly? I'll take it, since this Skate. is free.

Another big issue - the game is fun, but it's very honed in on "Join a public server and either hang out with friends, or just run around doing generic missions". I like the "training" storyline set of missions, because they have a flow, actual NPCs (well, their faces at least) that have personality, and they do a great job of actually teaching/reinforcing ideas in the game, but the generic looping missions get tiresome quickly, and there's absolutely nothing else AFAIK - no score attacks at parks unless you manually put them in.

My hope is this - throw in a few solo Score competitions, especially at the in-game established Skate-parks. Make them repeatable if you want, but give more variety beyond the Ragdoll/Line/Sequence missions at random locations. Of course, get Hall of Meat in there as well if you can, but give us a mode that's been in skating games forever! Also, more than just specific tricks would be nice - take inspiration from THPS if you have to! Finding special "secret" items that give you bonuses, for example. Heck, do Solo and Online score comps! Would be a fun way to engage the community, especially since most skaters just ignore eachother anyways right now.

Oh, and this is the biggest thing - If you can't, at some point, set up isolated server functions to allow small friend groups to play privately, at the VERY LEAST add an actual offline mode. This is going to be necessary, especially if the game will ever be more than just a Live Service Experience™. Charge $10 for it (but give us Actual content and access to more cosmetics, to make it feel like a real game) if you have to! I will happily host servers for just my friends, if that ever becomes a "thing".

Great feeling game, the combat is amazing.

Too bad it's a $30 game that launches with its store and advertising a $20 halloween bundle, as well as 20+ character skins and 3+ each character colors that all cost minimum $5, and no modes outside of versus and arcade.

Not worth it in its current state or at its current price. Either wait for a sale or wait until they add actual content

So unfunny and painful that we ended up drinking to cope (not a joke). Awful Writing. F-. Whatever happened between the writing of Prom and Camp is terrible and awful.

All of the dynamic neutral and crazy combo structures of other Tag Fighters (Marvel vs, Skullgirls) but without the incredibly complex button inputs, and with unique character designs thanks to the Power Rangers crossover. Definitely a fighting game worth checking out, especially if you dislike motions.

Insanely fun and solid fighting game, super diverse cast with a bunch of unique and interesting mechanics, a fighting system that's not too complex and not too shallow, and Terry Bogard is in it. I think they should give Shermie back her normal hips though. Also get rid of the universal girl boob physics

A blast from the past and well worth the $1 while on sale.

Pros:
  • Incredibly simplistic and classic shooter gameplay loop. Spawn in, you have 5 weapons, movement is solid, there are no superfluous mechanics. Shoot the bad guys. Have fun.
  • Incredibly classic gameplay connection experience. Queue up or check out the server browser. Join a game. You're in.
  • Adorable and charming aesthetic, they really went all-out with the theming. Each map has unique objectives, from defrosting plastic T-rexes, to lighting candles on a birthday cake, to capturing control points on a toy christmas train, to classic TDM in a cute Mean Greens board game arena.
  • For music nerds - adorable leitmotif that pops up in almost every map's unique theme.

Cons:
  • Almost too simplistic. It's not a game you can really spend more than 6 hours playing at a time unless you really are into a specific server or community. Needs special weapons as map power-ups, or some form of additional weapons.
  • Some of the map themes get repetitive incredibly quickly.
  • Appearance is randomized. A simple request: let us choose our army man/woman design and preferred DM color.
  • A few re-used art assets, namely the Army man's head graphic, which is used primarily for the player's Hp indicator.
  • A... subpar HUD. Needs to be redone and a minimal option.
  • Very little sound-design in-game besides the guns firing and footsteps. Sounds when you get hit with bullets would be a nice addition, like plastic chipping.

Over-all an easy recommendation and a solid 8/10. If it's on sale for $1 when you're reading this, BUY IT. It is easily worth the $1. If it's back to its normal $10 price, buy it only if you really like simplistic TPS games that are easy to hop into and spend an hour or two just playing. If it drops to $5? Grab it if you like shooters.

Things you can do in Yakuza 0 -

- Be a real-life member of the Yakuza (potentially)
- Meet a man that dances sexually and walks around in his underwear
- Learn how to fight by breakdancing
- Share japanese hostess/pornstar trading cards with a pervert
- Be a girl's pretend boyfriend because she said he has an eye-patch
- Learn about and participate in real estate
- Teach a man with a very big bouffant how to lie about what he does on breaks from his punk band
- Play rhythm games
- Get a shotgun and just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ shoot delinquents and ne'er-do-wells

Things you can't do with Yakuza 0
- Not have fun

As a PC player I've been waiting for a long time for the Yakuza series to come to PC. Unless you just hate Japanese-based games or having fun and getting engaged in a gripping tale about loyalty, money, and justice, with insanely likeable characters and a whole host of side stuff, you can't go wrong with this game, ESPECIALLY for $20.
