I don't recommend it now but if updates improve QoL and accessibility then my opinion will change.

To begin, whoever green-lit this release version and its facets really need to rethink their QA and UX. Many problems are minor things but there's a lot of them and they make a mountain. It really gives "Tarnished" a new definition.

The glaring elephant in the room is the lack of duo queues and scaling. Trying to play solo is way too frustrating to enjoy since mobs do not scale down with initial player count; this was tested on some demi-humans at level 1 with Executor, 3 light attacks to kill 1. Nah. I'm aware this isn't really enough to actually distinguish scaling but if I can only clear 1 fort before the Night rolls in, it's just too arduous. It only feels right playing as a trio and I've had some successes with some good randoms.

My biggest personal gripe with the game is trying to identify and reading information and I'll elaborate. Why do I have to go to the Visual Codex to see how characters scale with stats if I could just simply check the Character Selection? When I am perusing weapon drops in-game, why does they not show their stat scaling either? Trying to understand the nuances of the character Skills, for some at least, are too obscure for the sake of obscurity. It's one of those things where if you play enough it will click eventually but why should it take time for it click?
At least Wylder abilities are straight-forward enough.

The gameplay itself sucks in some regards, mainly:
  • The BR Fog circle gives you no indication where it will end up so you cannot plan ahead, nor does it give you a timer, you need to keep a count in your head.
  • The reviving near-death mechanic is so pedantic, especially if you're last alive in a Nightlord fight.
  • Dying is ridiculously punishing, it's not enough to lose a full level (and the stat-padding that comes with it) but your runes are dropped so it's actually 1 level plus progress. Just drop runes, like you do in Elden Ring vanilla.
  • Trios are socially engineered to be a headache if your random allies are trolling or playing their own game. Not going to name and shame but some players need to grow up a bit.
  • That one Magic-aspect fort (with the Carian magic rain) with a locked gate and no clear of navigating through it. Just skip it if you want to not waste time. Also having a pointer for where bosses are in camps would be nice, saves those precious minutes of time.
  • Cannot control the hawk in any direction, except for disembarking or descending. Straight up abominable.
  • If all the above seems like I'm disdainful of these points and I should just "git gud at game lul" think of how many challenges players have to do to even reach a Nightlord and those guys are evil, particularly the ones that seem to just run everywhere and won't sit for even a moment.

Saving the best for last, there are highlights that make this game fun, remembrances are excellent so far in adding personality background and lore. Adjusting your relics for various build diversity (even if some of the traits are loony). Older souls title bosses in the Lands Between are fun to experience. Matches never feel a complete repeat of any prior and terrain can be altered in a meaningful way.

Please FromSoft, just cook a bit more. It feels like a Beta version at the moment.

Early Access-recension
Let's start with the positives:
- Controls are simple and easy to understand.
- Activities are methodical, requiring step-by-step processes.
- The goal(s) of the game is easily understandable by either faction.
- The tutorial is sufficient to teach the controls and activities.

Now with why I have down-voted and what requires improvement to make this game a good purchase:
- No discrepancy between a random lobby and a pre-made lobby made up of IRL / online friends (this causes filtering and a potentially endless loop of joining / getting removed from lobbies).
- Socialising using in-game voice chat is paramount, I have not gotten away with staying mute for a game, let alone waiting for a lobby to commence (this will turn away players that are looking for easy, simple lobbies to join and play in, it can learn something from Among Us).
- No discrepancy between pending lobbies and currently active matches (more times I've zoned in as a Dead spectator than I have found lobbies in creation).

If you are looking for a game to join, you essentially need to know the people you're playing with or at the very least have a working microphone or almost always get booted out. I do not recommend buying this game unless you are absolutely persistent or you're waiting for a batch of quality of life updates.

Once this game can support solo players and random matchmaking then I can see this game kick off properly by its own two feet and not just by the hype generated by venerable content creators.
I assume this was inspired a lot by Among Us and yet it's got its own personality and quirks that separates the two.

Right now, it simply does not have as many options to cater towards the solo player, even if the intended demographic is for friends to goof around, it constricts the longevity of player interest and certainly, mine.
