5k hours, my honest review

This review will not focus on the story, as there are other people that covered that aspect of the game far better than I ever could, but will address various gameplay elements that maybe you would want to know before starting this MMORPG.

Where to start raiding

You've finished the Main Story Questline and what to see what the raiding part of this game has to offer.
There are mainly 2 ways to find people that you can raid with: Party Finder, or, forming/finding a static group:
- Party Finder = more accessible, as in you can find your own timeframes that you can do content, with no schedule needed - issue is, you can never really save your progress, as the people that you raid with are, most of the times, always different.
- Statics = Set teams that are formed with a schedule, progressing together through content, and generally accepted as the better alternative for raiding in FFXIV - could be an issue if your work hours are not fixed or you can't commit to a schedule.

How does raiding feel

Generally, pretty good! All of the raid bosses really bring something interesting to the table, and every single team member has a vital part in completing raids. From puzzle mechanics, to DPS/Heal checks, and tank responsibilities.

The gearing aspect of this game is really simple to understand, with the only modifier about gear being Materia, that boosts your base gear stats by low amounts, to give you the slight edge in encounters. Other items in fights that are vital to use are raid consumables, like food and potions that increase your health, and base stat values respectively.
Gear is shared between job categories: Tanks share the same gear; Healers share the same gear; DPS share the same gear, except for melees.
Best thing is, you don't need alts! One account can play and switch instantly between all of the jobs in the game.

Some nitpicks after raiding for about a year:
  • With the game being built around network latency, some aspects like dodging mechanics could feel a little bit odd at first, because - most of the times - when telegraphed areas that indicate where the damage will happen disappear, the game will take a "snapshot" of where the player is located, and if they happen to be in the area when that "snapshot" happened, EVEN IF they went out of it when the animation went off, they will still take damage. This is NOT the case for all of the encounters, and some fights will actually function on animation based attacks, which leaves the player with having to know which fights actually do and do not function with snapshots.

  • As of the current patch (6.3), if you start playing for a while, you will notice that the game "suffers" from a two minute burst window meta, that every single job has to comply with. Some consider this as a good thing for balance, and others - being used with how the game was handled before - don't really agree with this.

  • TAB Targeting is really bad. That's it

I got what I wanted from raiding, now what?

The game provides you with plenty of stuff to do - here are just some examples of what you can do:
  • Deep Dungeons (Rouge-Like with Procedurally Generated floors)
  • The Blue Mage class (essentially you playing Pokemon and collecting spells from mobs, with you actually using them!)
  • Beast Tribes/Tribal Quests (your daily quests that can lend you rewards like mounts and minions if you have a high reputation with them)
  • Daily Roulettes (duties that reset daily to give you special currency that can be used for materials or combat gear)
  • Crafting/Gathering (a huge part of this game, jobs that can be leveled to gather materials and craft gear, housing items etc.)
  • Housing (Plot system that is really customizable, although limited by it's own housing system)
  • Role-playing (Huge community behind this)
  • And so much more...

I only want to raid!

Unfortunately, if you only want to focus on the raiding aspect of FFXIV, the game has some pretty big content droughts in between major patches, with the pattern being that every Savage raid tier is happening around every 8 months.
One may start doing Ultimates, which are considered as the highest difficulty encounters in the game, and, in my opinion, the peak of how FFXIV gameplay was meant to be, would highly recommend giving it a try after understanding the game.
But no fret! The game has very low amounts of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) practices, and unsubscribing from the game is actually encouraged by the devs!

What is not encouraged by the devs*
*Your mileage may vary

Addons.
They are a pretty big part of the community at this point. Even though the developers clearly state in their Terms of Service that addons are strictly prohibited, it is more of a "don't mention about addons if you are using them, and you're fine" type of talk. Not going to elaborate on this, but they range from simple QoL additions, to full on hacks.

Final words

This review only highlighted stuff that hasn't really been said already and considered useful, and it will updated over time (maybe after another 5k hours, who knows)

Overall, I gladly recommend giving this game a try. It is one of the most friendly MMO's to get into, and that's probably why I got so hooked into it.

Thanks for reading my rambling <3

Despite all of the bad reviews, and overall my buggy experience 35 hours in, I can still say that this game is good fun. If you're in for the story and the amazing visuals (i lost 5 hours in photo mode making desktop backgrounds), and have enough patience to skip over the bugs, this game is absolutely worth every penny.
I'm very sure that the devs will gradually fix all of the bugs and make the game what it was supposed to be.
