Okay, this game surprised me. Like, genuinely surprised me. I didn't expect the sheer layers of depth to it that it ended up throwing at me, and I'm all here for it.

So yes, at its core, this game is about driving from A to B in a post-apocalyptic setting. But the focus is on exploration and trading, kind of like the X series of space sims. Yes, there is combat, but the meat and potatoes of the game is in managing your fuel, food, and water while traversing a hostile landscape where even the weather will mess you up. You'll need to keep your engine at the right temperature, make sure you have enough spare tires, patch up damage that the truck picks up through combat, etc. And then once you get to where you want to be, you've got to offload your goods.

I expected a static system, but it seems like the price of goods fluctuates depending on how many you sell. Flood the market and you'll be taking a loss. And that's on top of the usual supply and demand fare. And speaking of dynamic systems, the crew of your truck will also have different opinions of one another. They might have different viewpoints on how to go about surviving in the titular Dustlands, and if disagreements happen, it can shake things up. Conversely, they can also improve their relationships with one another, eventually falling in love and dropping their stress accumulation. You end up juggling the crew to find people who work well together.

And then comes the settlements. You can find abandoned settlements just begging for an enterprising truck driver to ferry resources (both material and human resources) and rebuild things. But you need to protect your investments as well. And then you can set up trade agreements with the other factions nearby, offloading some of your production for credits to barter with. Everything has a lot of surprising depth that I'm genuinely looking forward to seeing more of.

tldr; If you ever thought you were the one who could run Barter Town in Beyond Thunderdome, but also don't mind a bit of trucking? This game's one to watch.

I truly have never experienced a game like this. The closest thing I can think of to describe it is if Legends of Grimrock and Typing of the Dead had a baby, but even that is reductive.

Everything is based on words and you find the letters to fill in the clues as you go, with some pretty challenging riddles and puzzles around the way. I may only be three hours in as of this writing, but I find myself poking my nose into every book and cranny to get the most out of this. I do recommend going in blind, but even if you're spoiled on a few solutions, the sheer uniqueness of this game will hook you in.

I expected two, maybe three areas to explore for the Early Access branch.

I certainly did not expect six. And each is a challenge in itself. Hades was already a top contender in the genre of Roguelikes, standing out as perhaps even the best in the genre. Hades 2 has dethroned it by simply adding more. I can't wait to see how it continues to develop.

[Update - 6th May 2024] As of this update, Sony has reversed its decision to the point where I can whole-heartedly recommend this game without any caveats. I will keep the original review below as a record of the change, should Sony decide to force something new onto people, but consider it mostly outdated.

We nearly had it. We nearly had the game that would show everyone how to do a live service right. A well-deserved success for Arrowhead Studio.

And then they decided to enforce the PSN account linking for "security purposes", putting aside that Sony has an abysmal track record of account data security. And this is months after being able to play without doing so. If I choose not to, I lose access to my game. How is this fair? And as if that wasn't bad enough, community moderators in Discord were antagonising those who chose to voice their disapproval of this change. As of posting, no measures have been taken to reprimand these community moderators. And they still haven't addressed those who can't create PSN accounts due to PSN not being available in their country.

If you don't see this as an issue, you'll have a good time with Helldivers 2. But I, for one, will not be putting my personal data at risk, especially when I believe (and I am admittedly uncertain about this) that coercing me into surrendering personally-identifiable information by changing the EULA after sale is a violation of the GDPR.

First off, I need to address the elephant in the room.

Yes, the DLC is heinous. But literally all of it, aside from the alternate music and sounds, is available in-game without purchase.
The complaints of performance issues due to Denuvo, however, are entirely legitimate.

That aside, I will say that from what I've played, it's more of the same when compared to Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. Is that a bad thing? No, I'd say it isn't. There are changes here and there to further streamline things a bit. Portcrystals are now present in every major city to make fast travel easier, and there's also ox carts if you don't have a ferrystone on hand. Pawn inclinations are streamlined into one of four categories, but they can gain specialties that further alter their behaviors. I've yet to find any change from DD:DA that I'd consider 'bad' per se, but if you enjoyed the first game? You'll enjoy DD2.

tldr; It's like finishing a nice strawberry cheesecake and they offer you seconds with added sprinkles. But someone snuck a raisin in there.

If you're a fan of 80s action movies and don't buy this game, there will be... trouble.

Laika: Aged Through Blood is one of those genre mash-ups that sounds like it shouldn't work, but it does. It took a while to get to grips with the gameplay style, but once it clicks, you'll find yourself settling into a strange flow. The story is absolutely top-notch too, one that I guarantee will stick with me for years to come. I cannot recommend this game highly enough.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" comes to mind with Fuga 2. Following the first Melodies of Steel game, the dev team looked over fan responses and requests and implemented them to tune up the gameplay and improve it. The presentation is still as top-notch as ever and genuinely worth your time if you find yourself curious. If you're unsure, I'd recommend playing the 3-chapter demo of the original to see if it can get its hooks in you, as really not much has changed. But if you have a winning formula, does anything *need* to change? I'd say no. More of a good thing is... well, a good thing.

This is the most high-effort s**tpost I have ever seen.

And I love it.

Seriously, this is genius. It reads like a joke, but there's a lot of love put into it at the same time. It's crazy how well it works.
