Have I played enough hours to leave one of those "it's okay" comments?

In all honesty, this is one of the best digital card games I have played in a very long while.

Surface level gameplay feels slightly similar to things like Magic and Hearthstone, but the variety of mechanics and tactical depth is what makes this game completely different. Additionally, Horus Heresy Legions has a much bigger variety of characters than Hearthstone and new factions are being added as I am writing this review.

Each faction has a unique mechanic meant to suit a specific play-style. For example, do you like playing direct damage burn decks? Try playing as World Eaters. Do you prefer building taunt defence lines and utilise poison abilities on enemy troops as your opponent tries to break through? Try playing as Death Guard. And so on.

The factions, characters, and abilities all feel very lore friendly and make sense in their own way. For example, Alpha legion characters start with a secret identity and can choose to reveal who they really are in the process of the game, while also setting traps for the opponent to trigger when the time comes.

On the topic of factions, there are three neutral factions, including Chaos, the Imperial Guard, and Mechanicum. Cards from these factions can be used in any other deck and they even have their own heroes, allowing you to build a purely imperial deck, or chaos/mechanicum deck and so on.

The Horus Heresy Legions does not feel as stingy about rewarding players as some other cards games feel. As long as you keep playing the game in either ranked, practice or event game modes, you will often find yourself bombarded with card crates you've earned from just playing the game.

The game also does not feel as pay to win as some other Warhammer card games (looking at you, Warhammer AoS Champions Online). I have some friends who successfully built very competitive decks without spending a single cent on the in-game digital card packs. The 'crafting' system is quite interesting too, as it is particularly difficult to get the exact cards you want to have in your deck. Instead of allowing players to exchange the cards in their collection for gems, the unusable duplicates are automatically converted into gems, which can be spent to get individual cards from the store. The store items change daily, adding a degree of luck and excitement when finally getting a troop card, tactic card or character you have been trying to save up your resources for.

The developers are clearly passionate about the project, and a doing great job updating the game very regularly, making balance improvements when needed and listening to the community. The player-base is also very active these days, especially considering the very recent addition of the fan favourite faction The Thousand Sons.

The event system is quite unique as well. Playing event includes playing a ticket (which can be easily earned just by playing practice or ranked modes), selecting one of many characters (some of which are unique for the events), which represent either loyalist or traitor forces and selecting one out of a selection of three character-specific pre-made decks (the fact that they are pre-made allows you to test out different play-styles with the same character and pick the one that works the best for you). You get three lives and 12 games to play, ending in either you winning the 12 games or losing on the way, getting a tiered reward card crate anyway. The events change every two weeks, and if you are a part of a player lodge, you also get a tiered crate, awarded for the collective points your lodge members scored in an event.

The community aspect is also great, as there is a 24/7 global chat, which can be accessed through the game's main menu. The players are quite friendly and through the time I've played the game, I have not met many toxic people in the chat at all really. The chat has also got a feature where you can click on a single text in another language and get a translation. User-created lodges also act as group chats, where you can invite your friends and/or let other players join. Besides from collective scoring in the events and global rank, the lodges can also be used to share your game replays or the replays of your card openings.

The game feels fairly well balanced at the moment, yet, as you can imagine, a lot of your winning potential relies on random numbers, draws, and your own ability to make a deck competitive enough to successfully counter or find the way around most of the game mechanics. But this statement is true about most of the card games anyway, so you know what you are getting into.

There are not many negative things I can really say about the game, other than that the UI can feel a slight bit clunky at first. And potentially, you might not like some of the voice acting for the in-game character emotes/voice-lines. I'd say, they are mostly voiced well enough, but some do stand out as slightly off. It doesn't bother me though, because I tend to play my card games muted with my own music on the background.

I can carry on writing positive things about this game, but I think you got the point. It is a solid card game, with some unique and ambitious new mechanics, active players, a vast variety of characters and factions, which appeal to various play-styles and a generous reward system, which can let you build a very competitive deck without spending a single coin on the game.

And most importantly, it's a good, free Warhammer game! Set in the much-loved 30K setting! All your old friends are here!

Have fun and may the true emperor's light guide you and bless your starting hand.

Bright and positive platfromer. Big variety of levels, puzzle element with gravity-gun and physical environment, polished gameplay. This game is a great example of modern adventure platformer.

It's exactly what you think it is. Progress through 1000 rooms of horror in cute style with lots of references to popular creepypastas and games. Definitely worth checking out. And it's free! What else do you need for positive experience? :D

Great game with deep meaning and serious message. Enjoyable to play, although the game is not for everyone. Artistic and smart. I do recommend.
