I've so far greatly enjoyed this game. I was fascinated by the art style, that alone made me want to explore this world, that is unparalleled. The atmosphere, the music, the sound design, the art, all of it is truly phenomenal. It alone, for myself, has carried the experience. The gameplay is adequate, it's quite janky at the moment and has some occasional quirks but for where the game is now in its early access it's acceptable. It's got a solid gameplay foundation with plenty of opportunity for the game to expand on and explore the depth of the world through it as it matures more.

That would really underpin the entire review, the game is naturally immature, but what the game is trying to nail it has done so exceptionally, selling me and many others on the experience. Do be mindful of this if you're interested, if you want more gameplay and a smoother experience, it's best to give this another year or two to bake. If you're like me and an utter art nerd who's intrigued by the world, this game may well be very worth it, it certainly is for me.

The way the levels change and react to the missions you've done I found deeply unsettling. After aiding the Eurasians for a while for their fun elimination missions, I entered a map to find it had been completely overrun by Eurasian cyborgs. Dense fog and ash obscured my view as I navigated the swarm, using countless piles of bodies as cover to hide. The entire level had changed in it's physical environment and my pathing through was drastically different due to it. The whole time I couldn't help but feel guilt and remorse, for a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ funny mech cyborg video game.

It truly does NAIL the atmosphere unlike any other game. It's a richly unique experience filled with mystery and wonder, so few answers, the few you get you need to look for visual clues and then they raise even more questions. I love it.

So far I've adored this game, it's quickly become one of my all time favourite games and the more I play Foxhole the more I love it. An MMO game that blends the World War themes perfectly with the always online interactivity create an incredibly visceral and engaging gameplay loop.

This is achieved with a strict adherenceto player driven warfare, with developers and AI almost entirely absent, making the war effort a combined effort of hundreds of players, each doing their own small tasks that help build into bigger operations and movements. Each player really is an invaluable cog in the vast war economies, leading to fully realised consequences that can have impacts on the entire war, even if seemingly minor.

Gameplay wise it's a bit janky; this is a consequence of the EVE Online model they've adopted in which all players from around the whole world play on two servers, each with global reach. For someone in Australia there's a noticeable delay with actions, but thanks to decent net-code and all players being at this equal disadvantage this rarely has any consequences on battles and the flow of gameplay. So far the biggest issue with it is climbing over things, it feels like you have a broken leg sometimes.

There's an excellent amount of depth implemented in each aspect of the game, with a singular tightly wound focus on warfare. There isn't any unecessary fluff, every single item has a purpose in the war, and no amount of effort to the war is ever wasted.

This extends from the back line (logi) all the way to fighting on the frontline, and even sneaking behind enemy lines to snoop on their intelligence and disrupt their own supply lines and logistics, each part operating entirely independently by players. Even if you have a minimal amount of time you can spend on games, that minimal amount is valuable to the whole team, every unit of resources harvested helps, every kill you can make helps, every trench you can dig helps.

There is no wastage with this, it feels incredibly concise and as if it's driven by a distinct and clear vision that all aspects of the game are unified in achieving. It's an incredibly rich experience and frankly I love Foxhole, absolutely worth the standard retail price if you're willing to splurge.

EDIT 2: game ded

EDIT: A lovely individual helped me find the very content I said doesn't exist, I feel kind of silly now for my ignorance lol, however I'm hesitant to change my recommendation to a no. The evidence presented can be interpreted in a couple of ways and I'm choosing to huff some copium and interpret it as genuine from the devs, so far I haven't had reason to not trust them.

Let it be a warning to those interested however, development HAS been reduced significantly due to financial issues with the game, this very well can spiral into the death of the game. Please keep this in consideration, as the game stands I still love it, but this may not be a worthwhile time investment for most. I'd wager that giving this an additional 6 months could see significant change in the status of the game, so I'd recommend waiting before purchasing.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

A lot of the negative reviews seem to be steeped in just straight up misinformation, there's a popular negative review saying devs have shut down development and given up after ignoring the community's requests. Funnily enough the big update that everyone's been waiting for has just come up bundled up with a bunch of extra community requests.

Frankly the backlash to the game has been unwarranted, the community knew the state of the game they were buying into, developers made it abundantly clear, and they've been completely transparent on all of the progress of the game. No malpractice has been occurring and seeing reviews claiming so is entitlement at best.

Game still has a long way to go before it's complete, so I'd argue holding off until another year of development would be ideal, I'll keep playing and loving the game as it is because frankly designing, building and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around with your ships is so much fun on its own it's kept me happy. I'd recommend the game but of course with the caution that it's very unfinished, hence the early access.

The game is entirely surface level, every single addition they make is one executed poorly and without adding any real substance to the game, something I've noticed expressed in other reviews.

The main draw of the game, the arctic setting, is so underutilised that it's practically a war crime. Temperature means almost nothing, it only affects you on the surface, and it's basically a timer of how long until you need to sit in a cave, on a vent or a Snowfox for it to replenish, it just slows you done, it has literally no effect when you're in the water.

The surface areas have almost no reason to go there. There's two main ones, the Arctic Spires and the Glacier. The Glacier is interesting, it has some vibrant and interesting environments and makes use of a Spy Pengling and is very winding, it's like a maze and contains some story elements that at first become interesting, until the story actually wants to use them (we'll get to that).

The second area is the Arctic Spires, where the Worm lives. There is a single reason to go here, a small story location where you have to scan a part of the Alien's new body. That's it, it's enormous, full of resources, and a giant maze, and it's completely useless outside of finding this one story location. The resources are all the same that you can find underwater and you probably have a lot of them, they only every consist of low level materials. The Worm is fun and scary, but an absolute pain when you realise there's no reason to be out there.

The entire draw of this standalone expansion, is so underused and almost forgotten that it's just a chore to explore there, there's nothing out there, aside from the story.

Which is a whole other beast. The story gets in the way of natural progression and exploration completely, while removing the mystery of the aliens in the first place. Aside from giving them another generic sci-fi precursor name, the "Architects", it introduces you to an actual member of the species, that imprints it into your head and gets called Allan. Within roughly 30 minutes of play.

I'm not joking, the very beginning of the story is meeting an alien and calling it Allan. There's no buildup, there's no intrigue in the environment, it just happens. The pacing is atrocious, things just happen at the start. You're flooded with all these alien artefact sites that do NOTHING. That mean NOTHING to the player. It's there purely to get the player to explore, because there's nothing to explore. All the underwater biomes are so similar that exploration feels worthless, the star ship wrecks hidden away are cool at first but much like everything else serve almost no purpose. Exploration is sacrificed entirely for the story which is already bad.

There is a singular interesting character in the story, pirate lady. I don't remember her name, but she interacts with you occasionally with generic distrust. The most interesting thing about her is listening to her logs of hitching a ride on a leviathan corpse, actually interacting with her leaves a lot more to be desired, and like everything else, is completely underused.

I've used that word more than a single element in the game has been used, and it's a colossal disappointment. I was so incredibly excited for this game as the potential change of environment created so much potential for the game itself, yet it was all executed so poorly. I wanted to give this game a fair chance, but after getting thrown back and forth across the entire map so many times, I've found I have to do it again, right at the end, and I just cant stomach anymore.

I strongly don't recommend getting this, if I could I would get a refund, because it really is just bad. Play the original Subnautica, it's phenomenal and this game doesn't come close to what it achieves.

POST 1.0 EDIT:

So the original review was a joke because I kept flinging myself into a furnace. I've since discovered you get awarded stickers for this. You can guess what the conclusion of that sentence is.

This game is genuinely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ superb, I expected a high level of quality from the original Homeworld devs but 1.0 has blown all of my expectations out of the water. The way they used the early access period to perfectly refine and tune the economy and progression is astounding.

There's always a next level, a new milestone that you can hit, some exciting new target you've reached in the last couple of shifts. You'll spend 4 shifts on a giant wreckage and get so much out of it that you're ready to fly back into another salvage.

The quality across the board is incredible, the game is very well polished in all aspects and having played since the very first version it's incredibly refreshing to come back to such a well worth end product.

To add to that the story is fantastic, while some of the dialogue can be cheesy and forces you to listen to it, it does overall tell a good story that's incredibly relevant considering the last couple of tumultuous years. I won't spoil the story but the constantly bubbling tensions between the characters, driven by fully realised story beats and incentives behind each move have made this pretty gripping, I'm super excited at the end of each shift to see what new bit of dialogue I've reached.

As my furry friend Nekotine put it, "jesus ♥♥♥♥ this guy's an actual psychopath." I'm proud to see the game come such a long way and mature it's story like this.

Game is a masterpiece, I adore it and will continue to espouse gushing ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ over it for foreseeable future, if you've been even slightly interested give the game a buy, it's WELL worth the price.

Yeet myself into additional furnace right now pls

The game barely functions, built on an old engine and they still managed to break the stuff that was already made for them, looks garbage, feels garbage, no info, no nothing, basically another Radical Heights.

♥♥♥♥ you Daybreak for this, Planetside series has died for this failed abortion.
