Rat catching is still alive in 2021. Trying to relive the days of Hexen and Heretic - this is a close as you will ever get in a wonderful mix of 4 player cooperative survival versus an onslaught of ratman and chaos.

Been playing this game since beta and the previous one as well. Its the only game on steam that I come back to just because the pure amount of fun the gameplay has to offer.

The wise Alaundo once said "the Lord of Murder shall perish, but in his doom he shall spawn a score of mortal progeny. Chaos will be sewn from their passage" ringing in one of the greatest sagas of RPGs of all time. As someone who grew up with rolling dice starting with the OG Redbox, playing the Gold Box games, spending countless hours on the infinity engine, NWN under bioware, Temple of Elemental Evil, DA Origins, and pretty much everything in between that I could fill time with between actual game sessions I am beyond excited to see BG3 land with Larian who revitalized the genre of top down turned based Western RPGs under Divinity Original Sins 2. We have here a match made on mount Celestia and its finally here!

In terms of the actual game, its EA. So expect that things might not be fully developed. Larian does great with feedback and actually makes changes based on it. They are a rare studio in this day and age.

Does multiplayer work? Yes, it has worked fine so far through the introduction area of the game. I have more to play through obviously but I am trying to enjoy it slowly like a fine scotch with friends.

How are the controls, game and combat? Absolutely fine. Its a turn based RPG - the animations are smooth and noticeably better than predecessors in some areas.

How close is this to DND 5e? Close as you are going to get without playing a MUD or going to Roll 20/Fantasy Grounds. There has never been a complete smooth transition of the rule sets with either TSR or Wizards. While some have been not great attempts (looking at you Ruins of Myth Drannor and Secret of the Sword Coast) so far my experience with BG3 has shown Larian has brought alot to the table (for example all the bonus actions you can do). Most importantly there are freaking skill checks with dice roles making none combat abilities mean something. Skill checks, ability checks, proficiency checks, etc.. whatever you want to call them has been core to the genre. Larian has done a good job incorporating them.

How is the look feel of the game? Honestly feels more like Planescape Torment so far then it has Baldurs Gate even though its Forgotten Realms. Maybe it will change as the game develops but it screams spelljammer inspired. It won't give you the same vibes as say Dragon Age Origins or Pillars of Eternity did which I would label as dark fantasy but is bordering on a cthulhu aberration theme just because of mind flayers being front and center. Needless to say don't except it to be the same feeling of the OG Baldurs Gate - the cut scenes alone should be plenty of evidence that it is a Larian RPG - and the tension they build is pretty much escalated immediately to varying degrees of peril you wouldn't find until at least mid to epic level in a more traditional game. Its not a slow build from the intro, its in your face figure it out. This might be off putting to folks who prefer a low magic at first, slow reveal of the world you might see in say classic fantasy novels but here we are in 2020 with every peril trying to surpass the previous one with exponential ridiculousness. Its really fitting for its time.

That being said go into understanding its the most faithful DND system in a while , in the forgotten realms world but except a twist of the macabre cthulu-esque, with Manual of the Planes as default rules, weaved together in an epic Larian story. Its going to be awesome so please gather your party and adventure fourth!

At fist it was unplayable for me with a:

2700x
1080ti
32GB DDR 4 @ 3200 Mhz
1440p gysnc monitor

As I was experiencing not just have frame drops, but also stuttering.

Reading through a forum post on steam I came across a suggestion to download the latest C++ Redistributable from Microsoft's webpage.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads

That made all the difference, now I can actually play it.

For whatever reason this makes me nostalgic for old school Dungeons and Dragons. The kind that was super deadly and that if you made it past the first couple of levels that was a rare thing.

I love this game. If you like side scrolling, classic 16 bit feel, dungeon crawling, RPGing, with a "Rogue Like Twist" then this is the game for you. Prepare to die often, but really that is part of the fun is it not?

Being a huge fan of the first Dungeon Defenders I have been enjoying the second one. Towers don't seem as strong as they were with the apprentice, but that is oaky. I do like the addition of map specific towers, traps, and dangers that you can unleash on the mobs.
