Shallow story, your only motivation (children) remain abstract (seems like a sorry attempt by the devs to come up with a reason for you to go into the machine). The metaphors remain on a incredibly flat level ('oh yeah xyz probably stands for industrialization' - so deep...). The whole game tries to be very deep, but fails at having any themes that go beyond the obvious.

This is why video games have a long way to go to become an art form.

Alan Wake was good, this is garbage. Obvious encounters, boring mechanics, lame story.
