An Asy-what kind of game?

Dead by Daylight is an asymmetrical game. This basically means that you have a different number of players on each side and in this case: this is a 1 vs 4 game. Four survivors against one killer. The killer’s job is to sacrifice everyone while the survivors’ job is to escape from the “arena” by repairing five generators and escaping before the killer gets them all.
That’s the gist. There are a ton of other rules for both survivors and the killer and describing them all would be boring, so let’s just leave it at that.

How do you win in Dead by Daylight?

Dead by Daylight is supposed to be a simple game. On paper, as a survivor you have to escape and as the killer you have to kill everyone before they do. Well, that becomes a problem when the killer is faster than you and you have little to no way of defending yourself. So what happens when the killer catches someone? Well, each survivor can take 2 hits before they are “downed”. One hit makes them injured and the other one makes them fall to the floor where they can’t do much but crawl. This is when the killer usually picks up the dying survivor and hangs them on a meat hook. Once they are hanged the killer goes out to look for other survivors. Another survivor is supposed to come and rescue the hooked survivor and maybe even heal them a bit after which they should go back on working on those generators. Basically, instead of just killing and murdering people on the spot (like they do in horror movies) these killers give you a few tries. Usually each survivor can be hooked twice (they instantly die on the third hook), so it kind of balances out the game. The killer is supposed to hunt and hook survivors, the survivors are supposed to start generators, help their teammates and escape. On paper, this is well balanced and when matches work like this, they can be a lot of fun…

However

Say you are a survivor who got hooked and you watch as the killer hooks you. Sucks but, hey, that’s the game. Guess there isn’t much you can do but wait for someone to hook you when the killer goes away. Oh, what’s that? The killer didn’t go away? He is standing in front of you guarding you until you die on that hook? Can he/she even do that? (camping)

How about this, the killer went away but as soon as someone unhooked you, came right back and went straight for you again because now you are an easier kill. Well, he/she caught you again and now it’s your second time on the hook. You got saved again but the killer ignores everyone else and goes to hook you again making you die for good. (tunneling)

Oh, what if the killer didn’t even have to hook you three times? What if, I don’t know, they could hook you once and just flat out murder you because they equipped an item before the match started. So after your first hook, the killer just flat out murders you. (moriing)

But hey, don’t worry, as a survivor, you have the most ultimate weapon of all: disconnecting. When you are losing, just leave the game. Don’t give that killer the satisfaction of killing you because he is a better player than you. Sure, you will make the game worse for everyone, but if you aren’t winning, why should anyone have fun, right? (DCing)

If it’s broken, don’t fix it

What I mentioned above are the most common ways of how this, otherwise great, game becomes a frustrating nightmare (no pun intended). It’s really easy to be a ♥♥♥♥ in this game. If you want to win as a killer, the easiest thing you can do is one of the above mentioned methods and win almost any game, and there is almost nothing that can stop you. Sure, the survivors might have a few perks that can help deal with a tunneling or camping killer but ultimately, these perks only delay the inevitable cheap victory that the killer is probably going to achieve.

What can survivors do? Not much. So they easily get frustrated and just flat out leave matches mid-game and therefore ruin it for the rest.

My point is, that this game has major issues that should be addressed but the developers CHOOSE NOT TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT THEM. They have even stated several times that they consider camping and tunneling to be “fair game” but it really isn’t. There is special frustrating feeling when you want to play a few matches of Dead by Daylight only to be downed first, camped on the hook or tunneled and to be out of the game in less than 5 minutes.

Also, these are only the few major issues this game has, there are a ton of others that should be addressed but the developers, again, just choose not to do anything about it. So what happens next…

You’re poison

After you play a few games of Dead by Daylight, you will start to understand its etiquette. If you play both killer and the survivor you will quickly see what should and shouldn’t be done when playing each side. But then… you will see a player who will flat out just want to win and ignore the game’s “rules” and just play like a ♥♥♥♥.

So what do you do? The game has an after game chat where you can tell that killer where to go, or maybe you can send them a private message criticizing them about the way they play.

Oh, what about when you actually escape? Do you just exit and leave once everyone has made it out safe? Well you could do that, but why not mock the killer by doing a squatting butt dance at the exit gate. Show that killer how pathetic he/she is, even if they played fair and square. Show them what a better player you are by mocking and shaming him/her because it will boost your tiny ego.

Point is, these issues breed toxic players. You don’t just win or lose. You win and mock the other side or you lose and criticize the other side and again, the developers don’t do anything about this. But hey, it could be worse… At least as a new player, you will be facing other new players who are just learning the ropes too, right? Right?

The worst matchmaking in any video game ever

Hands down, the worst part of this game is its matchmaking. It doesn’t work. Nothing about it makes sense and it’s been like that ever since the game came out. You will start as a rank 20 (one rank for survivor and another for the killer) and will slowly climb higher the better you play. The idea is to be matched with survivors and the killer who are similar to your rank but that’s just b****hit. I have played so many games where rank 8 or 9 survivors would go against a rank 1 killer only to be mercilessly slaughtered. I’ve also played games as a rank 12 killer and went against a team of rank 3 survivors whom I couldn’t even hit.

Worst of all, you are able to form a survivor group with up to 3 other players (doesn’t matter which rank they are) and communicate during the entire match giving you a huge advantage over the killer. This way you will be able to know exactly where everyone is, what they are doing and, most importantly, how to mock the killer at the gate.

Why recommend this game then?

During those very few occasions when the matchmaking works and the killer plays “fairly”, this game can be a ton of fun. There is just something so exciting when chasing a survivor or running away from the killer. Both sides really appreciate the chase and if all is played well, you might even get a few “GG”s at the end game chat. These occasions aren’t uncommon but even 10 good games can be completely ruined by just one bad game against a really sh***y player. And because of those good games, I can recommend this game… with a warning.

This game is very fun but it can be really unfair
