10 years ago almost to the exact day is when I first started my TF2 adventure. I have had my ons and offs here but I always came back to this timeless masterpiece. Little did I know how much this game would influence me over the years. I’ve had so many experiences, met so many amazing people and found a home among it’s wonderful community. In spite of all this, Team Fortress 2 as it stands today is in a terrible state. Valve has effectively abandoned this game years ago, but that in itself isn’t where the issue stands. Community content has done more than make up for the loss, even if it meant no more weapons or balance changes. The community is what has carried this game since Jungle Inferno and is a reason why it still has any relevancy today.

The massive issue we have faced recently however is so big even the community can’t fix it alone. Team Fortress 2’s official servers, also known as “Casual”, has become a lawless world, where cheaters and aimbots have free reign with little to no consequences. VAC, Valve’s anti cheat system is largely ineffective as it usually triggers weeks to even months after detecting cheats from a player. Bot farms have been set up, with the intention of ruining the game for everyone, by flooding lobbies with CPU players with aimbots and shutting down any opposition. Valve has done effectively nothing to stop the bot farms from destroying their game and the community is paying the price. The profit they make is absurd even after all these years and they ignore the needs of the community and it’s patrons.

This game isn’t dying. It is being killed, by Valve’s neglect. They could fix this issue if they wanted to, but remain quiet, even now 5 years into the bot crisis. The time to act is now.

Please Valve, please preserve the experiences I have had, so others can experience this masterpiece as I have for so long. Please save my most favorite game of all time from being destroyed. My only request is to tackle the bot crisis, be it with an update to the anti cheat system, or even with legal actions against those responsible. Activision just did this for MW3, so I know it is possible.

Regardless how it is done, if this game is ever restored to it’s former glory, than I have no issue with racking up thousands of more hours here.

Sincerely, a concerned fan.

If there is a game out there that I can say I wish I was able to put more time into, it would without a question be, Insurgency Source. I have such fond memories of (majority) great communities, balanced fighting, hard but fair mechanics and weapon diversity among the game. I feel that this game hit the just right point of being a fun game that could attract new, interested fans and also be a harder tactical mindset shooter that forces the player to pay attention and rely on predicting the enemy, cooperation and using knowledge of the game to your advantage.

Players are given certain various tasks that might involve Protecting or attacking a crucial position, blowing up enemy supplies or attacking/protecting key target players. Certain gamemodes allow respawns of everyone at 1 set time with a limited amount of "Waves." When you capture a point or perform a certain objective, your team may gain more waves in a fight. If your team reaches 0 Waves then there is no more respawning from that point on, unless someone captures a point. Some gamemodes, such as a personal favorite, Ambush, dont allow respawns.

When a player joins a game and are assigned a team there will be roles open for the player to pick. These roles such as Riflemen, or Specialist allow for a more generalist playset that is flexible in more environments then the others such as Machine Gunner or Sniper that are inclined and encouraged to pick fights on their own terms and perform specific jobs. There can only be so many of each role, so teams usually are balanced without a team of Snipers, that may harm other games.

You do however have some freedom if you are locked into a certain role that isn't good for the scenario or just simply don't want to play. For instance, if you join a team that is full and Sniper is the only class available, you have the freedom to put down your M40 or Mosin and pick up a more generalist weapon like an SKS or an M16A4. You also are able to modify most roles to just what you might need with several attachments and weapons to choose, based on a budget of Supply Points. Supply Points allow you to gain access to equipment such as armor, weapons and other useful tools for the battlefield. each player has a set amount of these to change a loadout to how they wish. If players are doing the team justice and pulling their weight with taking objectives and killing enemies, they may recieve more points to improve their loadouts. You get alot of freedom here to play the game how you want to. Mix and match to find a great loadout for you.

Insurgency may scare some people off at first with the lack of HUD and unforgiving game mechanics, but once you learn them, they are pretty fun to use to your advantage. Supressive fire in this game is actually a viable strategy for area denial and explosives are particularly devastating and can easily destroy an uncoordinated team in one fell swoop. Look for flaws in an enemies defense and use that to shatter it. So many strategies can be used to gain an edge and even turn a fight. There have been many times where I cleared entire teams alone because of them being uncoordinated and it was because of thinking out a plan and not rushing them with a machine gun. Once you get past the learning curve of ~50-75hrs, you can do just about anything.

There is also a great PvE aspect to the game with genius gamemodes that rival gamemodes like CoD Zombies and Halo Infection in just straight up fun. Outpost takes a team of up to 8 players and sends an endless army of Terrorist forces to destroy a weapons cache that the Players are tasked with protecting for as long as possible. The waves get progressively more challenging and longer as they pass on, up to a point of absurd and prepostorous difficulty.

Survival is another fun gamemode that plays out similarly, the only difference instead of being on the defense, the players are always on the offensive rallying to local objectives to nearby weapon caches and eliminating anything in their way. Players start with next to no Supply Points, but with every time you survive until a checkpoint is activated, you are given an increase in supply points to build more threatening loadouts.

This is also only covering the main game. This game is EXTREMELY moddable to anyone's will with the power of the steam workshop. There are countless mods out there for people who want to augment the game's experience, from more realistic weapons sounds, or if you just like to have a spatula instead of a knife and fruit instead of grenades, in which case that's ok too.

This game is also stupidly cheap, at times for selling at prices then less then a gallon of gas. (At the time of this review, the game is selling for $1.99!)

Insurgency Source is truly a timeless masterpiece and is arguably one of the best games on steam, especially because it isnt from some big name AAA company. Insurgency wasnt made by Activision or EA. Insurgency was made by a small indie company called New World Interactive who are currently working on the game's sequel, "Insurgency: Sandstorm". Although IMO, it doesnt match up to this game, I still endorse both games and recommend to everyone that you purchase this game.

TL;DR, buy the game. It's awesome
