Wintermute is a semi-serious joke WAD for Doom.

It was created by Doug the Eagle and Kansam, and released in 1997 after two years of development. Kansam is also known for "Vikar's Trial".

The WAD is named after a texture experiment, where one of the textures was called "Winter (mute)". While the texture ultimately wasn't used in the WAD, the name stuck.

E2M1 is where most of the action happens. It has extremely ugly graphics (most wall textures consist of a single colour, or are based on Windows 3.11 screenshots), incongruous music (Bach's Brandenburg concerto no. 3), and strange sound clips (from various movies, TV series, and audiobooks).

The WAD has divided opinions; it is often seen as either the worst WAD ever made, or a work of a genius. On the aims, Doug the Eagle writes, "my chief aim in 'Wintermute' was to create something totally new and utterly unlike anything that had ever been seen in Doom before. I believe, that for good or ill, I succeeded in that goal."

I saw Wintermute at an anime store in MD yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out with fifteen DVDs of GITS: Innocence in his hands without paying.
When girl at the counter finally stopped him and took one of the DVDs and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each DVD and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning.

So I finally read this. I only give it 2 stars because it is something I will never read again, and I read it on a lark out of curiosity and because of the titillating elements being discussed. It was strange. Not just because of - well, let's just say it - bear fellatio, but also because of the moodiness of it. I also kept trying to remind myself of the "times" in which this was written. The main character's biggest issue is that she is emotionally disconnected and almost blah without being melancholic. This prevents me as a reader, connecting with her. The actual act with the bear is the vehicle through which the character finally seems to get her own humanity back. Her sex life (what little is revealed) seems mechanical, and she herself is a blank slate until the big reveal at the end. Passages about the bear are poignant, but again - the main character is disconnected. However, I did come away with the desire to learn more about Canada and how it was settl
