I used to hate this game and the mod it's based on. And by used to, I mean that was my opinion a week ago. The game is glitchy; zombies run through walls, dropping items sometimes makes them disappear (goodbye, bandages and shotgun...), and my friend has broken his leg and died by looking at a potato on the floor of a house.

However, I had decided to go ahead and give it another try. If so many people can play and love this game despite the bugs, why can't I? And now I have found out why.

Many players have the shoot-on-sight mentality. See a player, defensless or heavily armed, and kill him without asking any questions. I'm proud of myself to be able to say that in every single one of these types of games, I have always been able to push back bandit thoughts and help others if possible, or at the very least shoo them on their way.

Today was one of those days. Exiting a hospital in one of the towns, I saw a man, completely unarmed, running straight toward me. "Hey, stop there!" I yelled to him as he got close. He stopped when he saw me, raised his hands in the air, and typed out "ZOMBIE!!!" He was being chased, and with a shot of my beautiful Blaze rifle, took the zombie down. He still stood there with his hands up, watching me as I backed away from him. "Just don't get near me and we'll be alright." I rounded a corner and ran toward a group of buildings to go back to searching for supplies.

Not much longer later, I see a man standing in a little shack with an axe on his back, bleeding profusely. It was the same guy! I took a deep breath and moved towards him, bandaging him as well as I could with the server acting up. "Hey, thanks, man." "Yeah, no problem." Just then, a rifle shot was heard from a distance. "You hear that?" He asked. "Yeah. There's been a lot of shooting around here for the past ten minutes or so." I let him follow me, keeping a close eye on him. Not once does he reach for his axe, or get too close to me. But it was when a sniper from one of the buildings shot me and knocked me unconscious that I knew this man was a friend.

After a few seconds of thinking I was dead, my character actually woke up, with my new friend standing over me with bandages. "Damn, thanks! Come on, let's get out of here!" We ran across the street and through some buildings, trying to lose the seemingly endless amount of bad guys in the area. "Hey man. If we don't make it, thanks for not shooting me on sight." He told me. "Yeah, thanks to you, too. But hey...we're gonna make it. Stay positive." We kept on moving. And then...I lost him. I heard more shots, and thought for sure he was dead. I was upset, and wished that I could have done something. As fate would have it, though, I ended up turning into a building to see him standing inside. I honestly felt relief and happiness. We talked for a while, and he was hurt, so I taught him how to rip up clothes for rags to bandage himself with. We tried to figure out a plan when we heard moving around outside.

"Hey, there's someone near here." He told me as I looked out the window in time to see someone sticking their head around. I raised my gun. "Hey, you friendly out there?" The response was the shattering of the window as he fired off his weapon at me, and I shot my last round at him. I couldn't tell if he got hit or not, but I yelled out to my ally that they were out there. I saw him bolt out just as I turned to run up the stairs, and as I did, I heard more gunshots, and my heart sunk...

"You cool in there?" One of the voices asked me. "Me? Am I cool?" I asked, incredibly nervous and angry. "Yeah, are you cool?" Another guy asked. "Yeah, I'm cool. But what about you? Did you just shoot my friend?" "Yes we did. He ran at us and tried to kill us." "Because you shot at us, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!" I retorted. "Hey, you better watch your attitude. If you come downstairs, I'll put a bullet in your head like I did your friend." I didn't answer. I wish I could say I heroically went downstairs, swinging my axe and avenged my friend. But I didn't. I stayed upstairs, preparing for them to come up (which they didn't), and then walked outside to find the body of James. I survived, and he didn't.

I have never felt this amount of intensity in a game before. Excitement, drama, death, happiness and sadness. It was just plain awesome, and I'm already excited to take back my bad opinions about it and play it even more.
