Before it shut down few members of the community knowing this was about to come created an open source server browser for the game where it is actively developed, to the limits of not having access to the source code of course. However there are great many improvements compared to the Steam version:
- much larger community, around ~1800 players online and it's been steadily growing past few years
- maps/mod vaults, developers who continue to create new mods and maps
- new patches
- ICE adapter which means you don't need open ports anymore, people who lose connection can reconnect again etc. which was a major issue with the game back in the old days
If you choose to play the Steam version just know you're playing a handicapped version.
