Corn Pop was a bad dude, and he ran a bunch of bad boys. Back in those days, if you used pomade in your hair, you had to wear a baby cap. He was waiting for me with three guys holding straight razors. Not a joke. Bill Wright, a mechanic, gave me a six-foot chain and said, "You walk out with that chain and say, 'You may cut me, but I’ll wrap this chain around your head.'" So I walked out to my car with the chain. In those days, you had to bang straight razors on the curb to rust them. I told Corn Pop, "When I tell you to get off the board, you do it. I shouldn’t have called you Esther Williams, and I apologize for that." Then he backed down.
