A large amount of negative reviews show people that have only spent around 0.5-2 hours in the game. It is simply impossible to write a well meaning review with that much playtime simply because the prologue of the game is about that long. Unless they just skipped through all the cutscenes and in that case - idk how you could even take them seriously.

This game is great, it's not the most mindblowing game ever made from a gameplay perspective. It is fun though, it's what you'd expect from AC gameplay with some improvements here and there. The world and environments are incredible though, this is one of, if not, the most beautiful open world games I have ever played. Seriously, I can't overstate this enough, every inch of this map I've traveled through so far is breathtaking.

If you like AC games, you WILL like this game no question about that. They also give some extra difficulty options to make stealth more difficult and they even give an option for instant assassinations if you don't like the new AC method of some enemies not dying instantly.

My critiques -
Parkour: I wish it was better, all the flips and stuff are cool but I really want to see the return of a dedicated jump control by tapping the parkour up button. You've got a dedicated dive roll for sprinting and tapping parkour down, so why not do the same for parkour up to jump? It's just odd... Just overall too, climbing stuff can feel really finicky and lacks fluidity and dynamics from earlier titles still like no diagonal climbing.

Combat: I really wanted to see more variety in animations but unfortunately, you get the same finisher animations so many times and it starts getting old pretty quick.

Stealth kills: Another thing I wanted to see have more animations... I was really disappointed to see that ubisoft kept in the ugly slice with the hidden blade when a NPC is sitting or in a position that doesn't allow for a normal assassination kill.

Protagonist: Now I know some people might scream "you're a racist!" for this opinion but I really wish they went with a protag other than Yasuke. It's not as big of a deal to me as it is for other people and to me it has absolutely nothing to do with his skin color, I just feel like it was forced. No AC game in the past made you play as a real figure in history and I don't know why we needed to delve from that path in this game. I like the idea of being a "hidden" person in history that provokes historical changes in the shadows. It would've been cool to be just a random samurai that saw the injustices in what was happening and became a Ronin then meets with Naoe in a random encounter and realize they're fighting for the same cause.

I'll recommend this game because it can be fun and I can tell a lot of work was put into it. The parkour mechanics are the best I've seen in any VR game hands-down. There's a good amount of levels to play and there's some replay-ability with the collectibles and trying to improve on your time.

The issue I have with the game though is partly due to those collectibles. It makes the game take the focus off of the parkour and traversal. You see collectibles everywhere and it makes you want to grab them but that also completely takes you out of your flow and slows down the gameplay. Sure you can just ignore them but it's hard not to because again... they're like everywhere on every level.

I also really didn't enjoy the slow level where you wake in a hospital and can't run or jump... For a fast paced parkour game that felt so out of place and was just aggravating at times. I actually just ended up closing out of the game at a point because it was not enjoyable at all.

All-in-all, if you want mirrors edge in VR, this can definitely scratch that itch. The mechanics are fun and the gunplay works as expected for a VR game.

Some nice spots but overall tbh this is a pretty big downgrade from the quality I'm used to seeing from these developers. Idk what's going on over there but ya'll really need to step it back up. When it comes to both gameplay and now with this maybe even the DLC's. I hope the quality in this isn't representative of what to expect in future maps. This is a pretty disappointing purchase.

Just to go over a few things -
To make up for the lack in detail on the ground in the map they just put a bunch of puddles. It's like they watched some graphics mod video for GTA V and was like "yes lets do that"

The collision on multiple ledges is not lined up properly so your board just clips through it

There's missing textures

Holes in some spots of the map that you fall through

Missing faces on some models on the building making them see through

This just feels incredibly rushed and lazy.

This game is everything I had hoped it would be. It seems like a lot of people are reviewing this game not based on the game itself but what they hoped it would be coming from Pipe. People are coming into this with the wrong mindset, thinking it'd be Pipe with better graphics and animations. That's not what this is. This is a proper game now with totally physics based gameplay. It plays differently because it IS different. In my opinion, it's better. Much better.

Everything has been improved, the tricks feel more satisfying, performing lines is more rewarding, overall the gameplay is a lot more realistic. Basically if you have always wanted a good BMX game, this is that game. If you are someone that has spent 1000+ hours on Pipe, you may not like some of the changes but I guarantee if you give it a good chance and put in the practice, you will see how much better this game is. Come into this game with the mindset of it being a totally different game, not the same game.

Early Access Review
These developers are committed to bringing a genuine skateboarding simulator to life. Not just in the skating mechanics but also capturing the skating world of the 90's. Each update they come out with is packed with fixes, content, and just overall updates/improvements to existing things in the game. The current animations aren't the greatest and I hope for a complete overhaul with them eventually. The upcoming update is supposed to have improvements to the gameplay which I'm assuming is physics and cleaning up the current animations. Really looking forward to it and I hope updates like these keep coming, maybe at a slightly faster pace with Nacon fully backing them now!

I take back most of what I said, mainly about the developers being committed to this game and also the part at the end about Nacon. Nacon was the death of this game unfortunately. I'm not going to sit here and say I don't like the game, in-fact I love it. My hours show that. But I cannot keep my review as recommended especially after the latest events. Before I get into that though, I want to give reasoning for why I don't recommend the game anymore.

Since the 1.0 release there has been little to no improvements to the core game. There are very annoying bugs that have been prevalent since day 1. There are still tons of "experimental" features which have not been touched since early access. The devs keep promising improvements to the game and say that buying the DLC helps with that but we're now... How many DLC's deep? And still no real improvements to the core game. The developers don't communicate whatsoever anymore, they just churn out DLC's and provide a dev blog along with them that really don't say much of anything other than "new DLC" and minor bug fixes usually with missions or something. The latest DLC coming 9/26/2024 introduces new clothes, something people have been pleading for in the base game because the base game lacks in clothing heavily. There's lots of different textures to choose from but in reality there's 2 shirt meshes, 1-2 hoodie's, and like 2-3 types of pants. Not to mention it also introduces hair under your hat, something you literally can't get unless you buy the DLC.

The thing that has really pushed me over the edge and made me change my review though is that today, they decided to delete their community from their discord because they were tired of receiving criticism. All chats have been deleted, they called everyone toxic, people that have been in that discord for years. (the discord wasn't always that way, it started not too long after the Nacon buyout and people started to notice the extreme lack of fixes and improvements coming to the game).

I can't support a dev team that can't accept real criticism, and insults their users. It's pathetic and only shows that they have no interest in fixing problems but would rather hide them.

Best realistic tactical swat game. Genuinely reminds me of the old Swat games but tbh even better. AAA devs could learn from these devs. This game absolutely deserves all the praise it's been getting, obviously it has its issues but this is early access so that's expected.

-Before reading this, this review is not recommended based solely on the core game. YES I have 660+ hours. That would not have been the case without the mods. I am reviewing the game as it is when you first install it.

So, I'm not one to ever write up reviews for games but the developers have really struck a nerve on me with their response to the petition with 10,000+ signatures. ( https://www.change.org/p/easy-day-studios-gameplay-improvements-for-skater-xl?source_location=topic_page ) People are asking for a simple addition to the game that has been asked for since literally the first couple days of early access that could take a day or less to add. Modders added it soon after they could modify the game files.

I honestly at this point feel like I've done a disservice to the game for pushing mods. I was the first person to get modded maps into this game and since then I feel like the developers have just relied on community creations. They updated the games animations made it look okay then released in 1.0 and the only update they've done since then is a mod menu so their community can keep carrying their game.

They have shown absolutely nothing about what they have planned for the future. They haven't even hinted at anything. We've been hearing "we have plans for the future" since July last year when the game was released.

When you ignore your core playerbase it will cost you. Not that you guys care though because I'm sure you've already made your money worth.

And I genuinely hate to make this review because I had a huge amount of respect for the developers earlier on. That respect has been dwindling as time has gone on though.

P.S. Game is fun, I can't recommend it as a finished "1.0" product though.
