Zelda is a must. I got the new one which I'm playing through right now, and so far it's pretty great. I replayed OoT when I first got my 3DS, and it's still quite enjoyable. Definitely Mario 3D Land, it's classic platforming at it's best. Tetrarythym just for the FF music. I hear really good things about Fire Emblem as well...Also Cave Story, but you'd have to get that on the eShop, unless you want to pay upward of 50 bucks for the actual cart. Fetches a high price, but Cave Story + is just as good.

No worries. I played it on 3DS, and loved it. Metroidvaniia style with room challenges in place of enemies. Its a fine line between frustrating and rewarding. Difficulty is just right. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
