Best videogame RPG in decades, maybe the best in the Baldur series.

100 hours later, I have changed my review into positive ... although I would have rather just "neutralize" it.
I maintain all my previous comments below, regarding the evolution from UoC1 to UoC2, but I must add some good points for this game:
* a LOT of scenarios!
* those scenarios cover battles, campaigns and units too rarely featured in WW2 games, especially the Italian theater, the Provence landing in Southern France and the post Normandy/Market Garden operations in Germany in 1945. Those are refreshing scenarios among the usual Normandy-focused WW2 game.
* first DLC also cover some unsung campaign, and seems (not finished yet) to be worth its price in terms of content.

EARLIEST COMMENT:
UoC 1 was a masterpiece of refinement: pretty, classy, complex but all the while easy to get a grip on.
I have played each and every campaign several times, always with as much pleasure and fun, trying to make a perfect run. I have accumulated almost 200 hours of play and bought the game several times, gifting it to like-minded friends. Playing turn-based wargames for about 20 years, I considered UoC 1 the best thing that happened to this genre in at least a decade, and advertized it as such: it was my first Steam evaluation seven years ago already.
Needless to say, I was expecting the sequel with outmost impatience.

13 hours of testing later, I couldn't be more disappointed ...
Gone is the refinement, the game is overloaded with unecessery features, random tactical cards, ... The supply system which was the feat of genius in UoC 1, unforgiving yet immediatly understandable, has been complexified beyond recognition ... and any notion of fun. Gone also are the nice busts representing units, replaced by more detailed vehicles: I can understand the logic, but my preference rather go to the previous version. But in order to showcase such detailed units as well as maps, the camera has been zoomed in and locked, making it impossible to encompass the whole battleground in one glance, as it was possible before.

Not every new feature is bad. I like the new airborne drops, amphibious landings, ... but those could have easily been brought within the previous engine. Stragglers & prisonners is a fun feature.
But those don't compensate for everything that was lost between UoC 1 & 2 ... :(

Very good turn-based wargame, with some rarely seen theaters of operation & campaigns.

An excellent ending to a great series, both books & games.

Perfect mix of atmosphere between 'Half-Life', 'Bioshock' & 'System Shock', with over 30 hours of gameplay to complete it.
Highly recommended.

Over-using the Batmobile kills the mood: it doesn't feel like a Batman game, more like a bad GTA clone.

Excellent turn-based Wargame.
The best since very long, maybe since Panzer General II ... :)

Excellent Wargame en tour en tour.
Le meilleur depuis longtemps, peut-être même depuis Panzer General II ... :)
