Tunnel Escape is a tactical turn-based RPG with some rogue-lite elements. The game takes place in an apocalyptic world where there has been a large scale outbreak of a zombie infection. A survivor known as Beatrice comes across a strange laboratory where she discovers documentation detailing a possible vaccine to cure the infection. It's a pretty typical zombie survival story line with few surprises, but the game does a good job in effectively utilizing common horror tropes and paying tasteful homage to many other classic horror media such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill.

As for the game play, you explore different sections of the research lab through random encounters. When exploring each area you will receive a series of random events. These events can range from combat battles, treasure chests, stat adjustment vending machines, story sections, merchants, and even a few quick time events. As you clear through the zones you will encounter several different characters and learn more and more about the secrets within the lab. The game does a good job balancing it's story and game play, sprinkling in lore segments occasionally as you progress. The non-combat events such as the QTEs also keep the game from feeling like a slog of constant turn based combat.

As for the combat itself, there is a bit of skill and tactics involved as you are able to stun and slow down enemies by timing your attacks. When done effectively, you can easily defeat your enemies by denying them any turns. In addition, Beatrice's damage will increase as the passion bar on the right side of the screen increases, which you can do by engaging with the games H content. This unfortunately mostly involves letting the enemies take their turn and occasionally stunning you. While stunned by the enemy you can either choose to let the scene progress to keep increasing your passion bar, or attempt to break free. On one side this is a neat feature that leads to a decent balance between H content and game play, but on the other side certain battles can sometimes feel like you are constantly stunned or just viewing the same H scene over and over again. This is usually only a problem against some of the significantly faster enemies such as the nurses, or during some of the battles in which you are going up against a large number of enemies, but it can feel a bit frustrating to wait significant periods in between turns.

Aside from that, the content in Tunnel Escape is very well animated and illustrated with a large variety in themes. I will warn though that many of themes are far from Vanilla. Considering that Tunnel Escape is a horror game and most of your enemies will be monsters and mutants, a majority of the H content will heavily focus around those elements. The game strikes a decent balance between it's H and game play content without leaning too much into either direction and gives a little bit of something that everyone can enjoy.

If you'd like to see a closer look at what this game has to offer I have a short video review over on YouTube as well.
