Although a fantastic PvP deck building experience, Super Auto Pets has been struggling to find a balance between monetization and offering players the kind of content worth purchasing. I love this game, I believe it's one of the most fun products of its genre, but I simply cannot recommend it in the current state that it is in.

Monetization
While the game is free there are many avenues in which you could spend money - be it cosmetics or DLC. As far as I understand the purchases you make through Steam are tied to your third-party account. I do not like this. I would very much prefer if the game offered DLC directly through steam, having their own individual store pages like many other DLCs on the platform.

Another major issue with the monetization implemented in this game is how many paid hats, backgrounds & intros there are. While entirely optional I feel like the overabundance of paid content paints a very disheartening picture of what this game could have been if not for this overemphasis of squeezing as much money out of you as a consumer as possible. This, factored in with the lackluster development, makes me hesitant when considering if I want to support the game going forward. As of the newest DLC, the price you would pay for it is double of what previous ones would cost. I sincerely don't see what would warrant this price increase considering that the pack does not feature anything special. A couple twists on already existing mechanics, some interesting gimmicks here n there, but nothing that tells me there's been a genuine amount of extra work put into the creation of this pack.

Balancing

The game offers a plethora of options when it comes to building a deck. There's been some interesting developments as the game grew, primarily the ability to mix units from any pack into your own custom pack. Personally I see this as the only genuine reason one might want to buy the DLCs - in order to make the most optimal pack so that you can guarantee the best possible outcome no matter what opponents you face. It is inherently pay to win.

Aside from this, the game has had a disappointing history of poor balancing. Units going from meta-defining to alright and then they'd become utterly useless. This is in part to the game's eagerness to put you into a rock-paper-scissors scenario where you might end up facing a hard counter. There's very little nuance in how the game presents these instant win / instant loss scenarios. Sometimes you might be on a roll only to find yourself facing the exact same gimmick that puts you on your last heart - these occurrences are not that uncommon either. At this point, it feels like they're by design. A lot of the time you're fed easy wins only to end up on someone's plate. This is especially frustrating because it removes any accountability of user error - your build works? good. but make sure you don't run into something that's impossible to beat. Interactions such as these have become more and more common as new content is being introduced and I have a feeling this will keep happening. Adjusting the game's balance from group 0 is a monumental task at this point and I don't believe I'll find myself rooting for Team Wood Games to address the many cracks this game has been showing.

Closing Thoughts
Great game - terrible development. Amazing format and very rewarding if you happen to make a build that's truly unstoppable. I wish to see a game like this but without awful micro transactions. There's plenty of games that have cosmetic DLC and buying them feels like you're actually supporting the development of said game (DRG comes to mind, having a near spotless development history).
