http://www.steamgifts.com/forum/ZjZCf/so-im-a-complete-nerd-and-calculated-my-chance-of-winning/page/1#9113319 : g_i (= gi) is the probability to not win giveaway number i (= 1 - COPIES / ENTRIES), so for example g_1 = g1 in your notation. And gi and gj are not necessarily the same. Refer to http://pastebin.com/LXtKZDnv for an example I created to show what is going on.
