This game is so up my alley so it really sucks that I can't stomach playing it. The crosshair and viewmodel being way too low from the center of the screen makes me really nauseous, and not including any customization for either to mitigate that means I am unable to play the game.

Despite alot of other technical issues and desirable options it lacks, the Halo Master Chief Collection managed to include an option between a lowered crosshair (closer to the original Xbox experience of the games that use it) and a more centered crosshair, which I appreciated very much.

Pretty disappointed that this doesn't have something similar.

Tries and mostly fails at recapturing the claustrophobia of the early games, due to sometimes very tedious gameplay (tiresome reuse of areas and annoying/nonthreatening or bulletsponge enemies that aren't scary), puzzles that are often either braindead easy or overly obtuse in an attempt to be clever, and clunky first person action that can be tense or even thrilling at times, but more often just feels unrefined, unwieldy and occasionally unfair. Including a third-person mode in RE8 was a good decision, if only for me.

*Minor story spoilers :3*

Moments of great horror are brought down by mostly inert, handhold-y and cliche storytelling at best, along with an overuse of disgusting imagery/gratuitous gore that really desensitised me. I'm also so tired of the evil little girl trope, at least in how it's presented here (basically just F.E.A.R's Alma Wade with very little difference, beyond more of an attempt at sympathy I guess). Ethan and Mia are relatively uninteresting protagonists as well, although Mia's gameplay section towards the end is at least a nice change of pace (maybe just because she's not a stand-in white guy with a damp towel of a personality).

There are original ideas here, and great gameplay moments sprinkled throughout that do feel like a solid modern take on the RE formula, which is what makes the overall experience all the more frustrating and deflating as a series fan.

I powered through the story mainly to have greater context going into RE8, which I think I will enjoy more. Hopefully playing the two story DLCs will sweeten my palette somewhat.

*EDIT : Played thru both story DLCs and had a pretty good time. They did actually make up for distaste of the main game somewhat, especially with End of Zoe. Still a disappointment overall.
