Supergiant Games delivers again! I was hesitant about Pyre after reading a description, since the style of the game is different from what I typically play, but I enjoyed it immensely. It leans a little more heavily into the visual novel style compared to Supergiant's previous games Bastion and Transistor (which I also loved), and has very little exploration involved, in contrast to the other two.
  • I found the story itself extremely compelling - much more so than Transistor's, and possibly even more than Bastion's. This may have been because I had the patience to read every page of The Book of Rites and took every opportunity to "speak with" the teammates to find out their backstories, but I think overall the storytelling elements were a huge highlight of the game. 10/10
  • The soundtrack is I think my favorite from Supergiant so far, which is saying a lot - I've listened to Bastion's soundtrack regularly since its release several years ago. The music is not only beautifully composed and catchy, it also does a fantastic job illustrating the mood for certain scenes and characters. 10/10
  • Beautiful art is something you can always expect from Supergiant - Pyre is no exception. 10/10
  • The gameplay seemed to take a bit of a sideline, but that may be my own limited patience for sports-like games. Get ball to goal, avoiding the other team. The inclusion of a versus mode indicates to me that there may be more complex strategy than I'm personally able to appreciate. This was kind of underscored by how smoothly the AI passed the Orb and really controlled all three characters at once, where I was never able to really use the pass mechanic effectively. Within the campaign though, the standard difficulty (without handicaps given to the AI via the Titan Stars) was a little too easy, but increasing the difficulty could get frustrating for me. Either way though, the actual Rites were fast-paced and exciting, and I enjoyed them. 7/10

There are games out there that are almost exactly like BIT.TRIP RUNNER. But BIT.TRIP RUNNER is just so much better!! It's got incredible graphics and music, and it's incredibly addictive.
