This game was a lot of fun initially, hence why I have so many hours in it. It seemed comfortably balanced and rewarded attentive and competent gameplay.

Now it's very un-enjoyable. All your hard work to stay alive and progress through stages is rewarded with dealing with elites which are impossible to kill and enemies that don't telegraph their moves in any manner. I'm all for difficultly, but playing the game nowadays feels more reliant on luck than actual player skill. The majority of my deaths recently have been due to very cheesy and unreasonable means, which just makes me not want to bother playing at all.

In its current state I can recommend the game, but you won't find any longevity with it once you start to get familiar with its mechanics; only frustration.

EDIT: Malachites don't really matter anymore. Don't know if they got nerfed but I have no issues with them currently. So I will give this game a final, concise, verdict.

Gameplay is really good. Movement feels fluid and versatile, you feel like you have a lot of control over where you can place your character (except with jump pads which lock your direction and momentum, which is annoying). The separate survivors are fun to play and offer unique differing playstyles, you're sure to find one that resonates with you. The games mechanics feel solid, no complaints.

Art direction is really good, the worlds feel stunning and the camera angles can often make you feel like you're properly immersed in the action. Very good. Boss level design is lacklustre and underwhelming. Final boss has a really disappointing design, especially when compared with Providence from the first game. Final boss fight isn't fun or engaging. Just a chore. RNG whether you will win or not. Bad game design.

Music is very hit or miss. One or two great tracks, some atmospheric tracks that fit the vibe but aren't particularly special, and then some awful ones that feel out of place or are outright obnoxious. My personal opinion is the soundtrack is pretty bad, and as such is nonessential. I keep it muted most of the time. A real shame, as music could have added a lot to this game if done well, especially alongside the great visuals.

Conclusion: Great game, well worth the money. A lot of fun with friends until difference in skill becomes more apparent and runs aren't as fun anymore. Artifacts are cool for keeping gameplay fresh. Go play it!

A fun, defining romp through the rogue-lite genre. Definitely worth a try, especially with the new online co-op mod availible.

Bad Rats redefinies the puzzle game genre, reinventing it in a way that is refreshing and inpsired and complimented by fantastic gameplay controls, and an immense and immersive world filled with beautiful landscapes, charming characters and a gripping storyline. If there's one game you need to play before you die, it's Bad Rats.
