It's funny how almost all the positive reviews are from people who put in less than 3 hours into the game, because that was about the amount of time I spent actually enjoying the game.

This game hooked me initially with the excellent pixel art and synth soundtrack, along with the setting. The short retro-style cartoons are great, but are less frequent as the game progresses. The blatant pop-culture references do nothing for me, but I was willing to endure them and give the game an honest shot.

After the first promising 3 hours of the game, it starts a rapidly decreasing downward spiral in quality. The game really feels like it squanders alot of it's potential by making it a very simple, non-challenging, linear slogfest. Alot of the dialogue left me wanting to a point where I just started skipping past all the non-critical banter.

The gameplay boils down to combat, platforming, and puzzle-solving:

The combat is very simple and never becomes more complex than what they teach you at the very start of the game. It can also be buggy. For example, in the last sections of the game you encounter enemies who shoot projectiles that you can deflect with the baseball bat, but if there's another enemy that overlaps with the projectile, you will always deflect the projectile instead of hitting the enemy that's charging you.

The platforming is basic and feels completely void of creatitivity or originality in design.

The puzzles require only elementary-level problem solving, with one exception, which left me baffled because of how incongruent it was with the rest of the experience so I'm just going to chalk it up to bad design.

The last 2 hours of the game feel rushed as you spend the time yawning your way through repetitive platforming and combat that by the end leaves you feeling bored and frustrated. There's also next to no replay value for this game. There's no difficulty selection or newgame plus options, and a majority of the secrets are easy to find on first playthrough.

Overall this game was a complete let-down and really the weakest entry I've played that Devolver Digital has published.
