played through the game and all its dlc, most of it sucked. gunplay feels like you’re firing paintballs in a wind tunnel. half the quests are “go back to the place you just were and grab 10 beers or kill a slightly stronger midget.” boss fights? not really. you just magdump into their face with a sniper and they fall over. movement’s cursed too, inclines are velcro and sometimes stairs trap you in some inexplicable way. the fov feels like sitting 3 inches away from your screen and would make any quake player puke all over themselves. gameplay wise it’s the worst one in the series and it's not a close competition. if you really hate a person, make them get every achievement in this game.

...but the game has a personality that shines through a lot of the negatives and largely gave it the reputation it has today. i found the writing to be very funny at points, especially in the dlcs where the devs must've been let loose to do whatever they wanted. it’s janky and frustrating and broken in spots, but there’s this charm underneath all of it that makes you want to keep going. a voice of the atlas corporation would come over a megaphone proclaiming 97% of the workforce died or general knoxx would breathe very deeply in my ear through his echo device and it'd briefly distract me from the fact that i'm stuck on another ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ set of stairs.
