Its 2024, Naruto SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 is still the best in the series.

After the somewhat disappointing Naruto Storm Connections, I decided to take another look at Storm 4. Its a solid entry in the series that features the best gameplay hands down. With an insanely large roster of characters, fast action, spectacular graphics and a robust online experience...its worth adding to your collection if your a fan of the Naruto Storm series.

The Ultimate Dragon Ball Video Game

The oddly named Dragon Ball Z Kakarot is perhaps one of the best Dragon Ball games ever made. That is a very strong statement to make when you consider the vast amount of Dragon Ball games made over the years. However, none of them has attempted something quite as ambitious as DBZ Kakarot. This is the very first open world Dragon Ball Z video game and will become the measuring stick from which all open world anime games will be compared.

The gameplay of DBZ Kakarot is a mix of an action rpg combined with an open world that creates a unique experience like no other when it comes to Dragon Ball games. The game covers from the very beginning of Dragon Ball Z to the end (some of this content is locked behind season pass 2) and even features some movie content from Battle of Gods, Resurrection F and the future trunks storyline (requires season pass 1). That is a lot of content to squeeze into a single game and as you would expect some things are trimmed down or cut completely. Perhaps, that is one of the issues I had with the game.

..and this is to go even further beyond!

Iconic scenes such as Goku turning Super Saiyan 3 for the first time are really tame when compared to how they were presented in the anime. In fact, the presentation of the game leaves a lot to be desired considering what game studio was behind it. The graphics are not quite on the same level as Naruto Storm but its good enough to satisfy most. Some character models do seem a bit off and the large open world that you explore at times looks a bit dull with not a lot going on in the world itself. This open world doesn't feel "alive" like the open world in other games and might be a deal breaker for some. The game overall is not a remarkable looking game, but the gameplay does do a lot of the heavy lifting here.

Kamehameha!!

As mentioned earlier, DBZ Kakarot is an action rpg and with that you should expect various stats that improve as you play the game. Goku and friends level up and get stronger over the course of the game (their power levels are actually showed which is a nice tough) learning various techniques. In this game you form a party of up to three characters and you can only directly control one of them. In fact, some of the characters in this game can only be used as a "support" character and can't be directly controlled. Characters such as Goten for example. As far as how the game actually controls, anyone familiar with the Naruto Storm series will be right at home as the controls are nearly identical to that. Battles are quick and straight to the point, but I have only one small complaint about them especially towards the end of the game. It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense for there to be enemies as powerful as Super Saiyans just flying around on Earth for Goku and friends to beat up. It is a very minor complaint but that is one thing that has always bugged me about this game and it's the enemies and lack of variety in enemies. However, all the boss battles in this game are pretty exciting and this is where the game really shines from a gameplay and graphics perspective.

Conclusion

Dragon Ball Z Kakarot is a good first attempt at an open world DBZ video game. The foundation is there and if they do make another open world DBZ game there are a couple of things I feel that they must do:
  • Make a true open world on the same scale as Grand Theft Auto
  • Completely destructible environments
  • More playable characters
  • More enemy variety
  • Battle damage (damaged outfits, scratches on your character as a fight goes on)
  • More options in battle

A perfect example of a great idea poorly executed. That is the best way I can summarize this game after playing it for nearly 90+ hours. The premise for the game is simple, it's an asymmetrical multiplayer game where you play as either the survivor or the raider. The goal of the Survivor is to escape while the goal of the Raider is to eliminate everyone. Seems simple enough but there are multiple ways of winning while playing as the survivor and this is where things kind of fall apart. There are times that even while playing as the Raider, it's possible to get bullied by a well-coordinated team of Survivors. Which I feel kind of goes against the whole point of the game. However, this is the least of the game's problems.

One major issue I have with this game are its microtransactions. The aggressive pricing of the items in the shop are appalling and on top of that there is a gacha mechanic which houses the best abilities in the game. There is no other way of acquiring these specific moves unless you pull them using tickets, using the free coins from playing matches or the games premium currency (which requires real money or is drip fed to players through the battle pass). Some summon banners only let you use tickets or the premium currency which is kind of scummy. Despite my issues with the microtransactions there is another issue that hurts this game.

Before the implementation of cross play, matchmaking times were abysmal and there are times where I had to wait over 30 minutes for a match to start. Cross play appears to have fixed this, but I haven't played the game in a couple of months and not sure how things are now. However, this was one issue that I had with the game and since this game is multiplayer online, a healthy online population is a must for consistent games to happen. Due to the popularity of Dragon Ball, I'm sure that will keep people engaged but for how much longer? I know that I've been mostly negative so far but let's talk about the things I did like.

I like that you are able to create your own character or use already established Dragon Ball characters such as Bulma, Oolong and chi-chi. Each character has their own unique abilities they can use in matches which is kind of a nice touch. So, in other words, it's more than just a skin and I like the attention to detail on the moves they use. Created characters can use pretty much any move you have unlocked however the create options are kind of weak. If you are used to create-a-character having a ton of options, then you are going to be disappointed. I also like the way the Raiders (Villains) moves are implemented in this game and makes sense for each of the Raiders currently in the game. However, I should point out that it does seem some Raiders are better than others. One final thing I do want to point out are the various stages that are currently available in the game. Personally, I feel that there should be a lot more variety in the number of stages in the game. There just simply isn't enough and you will be seeing the same stages over and over again in a single gaming session. However, what is currently available is good and gives the players a mix of the various locations in the Dragon Ball universe. Alright, let's go ahead and wrap this up.

Dragon Ball The Breakers has an excellent concept and could have turned out to be a truly amazing game. The business model currently implemented in the game has hurt it a bit and the lack of balance between the Raiders and Survivors is a huge issue for me. I did buy this game day one and even managed to 100% all achievements in the game but was ultimately left unsatisfied. Only buy this game if you're a fan of Dragon Ball, multiplayer games like Dead by Daylight or it's on a steep discount. As someone that really wanted to like this game, it pains me to write this.

Game is severely lacking in content. Even the biggest Demon Slayer fans should only buy this game at a discount/sale.

Edit: After competing the game 100% I still stand by this. It simply doesn't have enough content to justify the 60 dollar price tag.

Pretty good game with tons of replayability but if your itching for that classic Resident Evil gameplay look elsewhere.
