it's okay for building vocabulary. it's basically a flashcard game more or less. You should already know how to read korean for this. learning hangul is easy and you can learn it in an hour or two.

you get various categories, and 9 words related to that topic. one example is bathroom, you get 9 things that might be in your bathroom and play basically a flashcard game.

there are 6 major topics, written in korean: food, animals, objects, places, numbers, and concepts.
numbers are exlusively sino-korean numbers, with no native korean numbers.

you have the option to have text written in romanji, or hangul. learning in romanji is a terrible idea, but you won't get the topic names in english unless you're in romanji mode. hangul mode is how you should work on your vocab, but you won't know what the subjects you're selecting are unless you already know those words in korean.

each topic will show you a picture and the word for that picture in korean, so you won't really know specifically what the word means. for example. you have a picture of a mug, and the name in korean is 컵 (cup). is it cup? mug? who knows.

after cycling through all 9 image/name combinations, you get to practice, which is always dragging korean words to the image. After this is completed, you get to play a test game. These vary by topic, but they are always the same game for the same topic. Bathroom will always be true or false, fruit will always be touch the falling picture that matches a word.

completing games gets you in game money, used to play terrible minigames that have nothing to do with learning korean.

while people compare this to Mega Man X, it's only because of the aesthetics and the name.

If you're looking for a mega man X experience, you won't find it here. it's not all that much like a mega man game at all aside from getting weapons and a weakness chain.

control-wise, it plays more like mega man Zero on steroids. you don't have laggy dashes like in the X games, and you can basically wall jump against the wall.

enemy types are few, with mostly variants of the same enemies throughout the level enemies are all responsive, whereas in mega man X, a lot were on autoplay, and would simply repeat actions. Most areas are wide open whereas in mega man, you tend to be in enclosed areas dealing with enemy patterns on a room by room basis.

There are no rooms in the stages. The whole stage is basically a sort of floating thing in the sky. everything is pretty open except 2 stages where there are no holes. levels hazards are the big thing about this game. they're everywhere, they're the biggest threat, they're in boss rooms, and they're pretty much the whole challenge of the game. avoiding lazers, electricity, ice and fire is a huge part of the game.

Bosses are nothing like your typical mega man game fare either, as they are more bullet hell affairs. you basically want to spam attacks on the boss and deal as much damage as quickly as possible while avoiding flurries of bullets. most bosses are in large rooms and you become teeny tiny.

It's a great 2D platform with somewhat of a mega man aesthetic, but it really isn't mega man at all. the protagonists have similar weapons to X and Zero and similar color schemes, but aside from that, it's basically it's own beast. It has a shallow resemblance to mega man.

The game is a great platformer, it's rougelike, with randomized level layouts, random powerups, and plenty of RNG determining how easy/hard your run will be. it's a fun game if you're into 2D platformers in general, with lots to experiment with and try out.

This is a fairly fun game. it's a bit like metroid meets contra. basically a twinstick shooter that pretends it's not one. you really want to get used to jump being mapped to a shoulder button so you can take full advantage of the twin stick gameplay.

Jumping though, is very finicky. if you try to jump from a ledge, your character 8/10 times won't jump and you'll just stupidly fall to your death. This version of the game added a bunch more insta-death challenges to frustrate you beyond comprehension. like in the first game, there's a green robot that chases you destroying platforms as you go up, platforms that you can't jump from the edges of, even though you really need to, and some characters don't fit where they obviously should, so you're gonna die a lot.

They added another stage full of insta-death, like an elevator that rises and breaks platforms, if you happen to be touching the bottom of a platform when it breaks, regardless of whether it would crush you or not, you die, and, lovely enough, at the final part of the elevator, it requires that you jump quickly to avoid being crushed... but guess what conveniently never works at that time? that's right, jumping! you just sort of twitch in place and have an even smaller window to try to jump out of there. Jumping is a major issue in this game.

That aside, if you want to play this casually, it's pretty fun, the achievement though all require perfection, which is pretty hard when you don't know when a jump won't work, or your hover will just stop as soon as you start it.

To make matters worse, hitboxes are a LOT bigger than you'd think, and you'll take hits from little parts of the boss you didn't think were close enough to do damage.

The game is very rough around the edges, but is still a lot of fun. a more refined version of this gameplay would be great.

it's like mega man meets Schmup.

it's a very bizarre and interesting system. Basically, you don't want to get hit at all, and you don't want to die at all. There are a lot of upgrades, hidden items and such, and poker.

Difficulty is fairly low, and it even has an easy mode. it's a pretty short game with fun challenges. you'll probably find yourself grinding a lot. you have a sort of active time upgrade system, fueled by defeating enemies. you start every stage with no upgrades and have to decide between mobility, spread, or power.

This system is probably the worst part of the game, as you don't want to die... like ever... More so than most other games. like a mega man game, this game has checkpoints, with a checkpoint being at a boss. BUT, you lose all your upgrades when you die, and have to build up your power from scratch. naturally, losing all your upgrades before a boss really sucks and leaves you at a major disadvantage. Luckily, most bosses in the game are absolutely wrecked by their weaknesses.

You get special weapons from the 6 bosses you fight, just like a mega man game. Unlike mega man though, you only have 4 health, and unless you're playing on easy, there are no healthy drops in the stage. It's not that hard a game, but it's very unforgiving of mistakes.

it's a fun take on the mega man formula.

A great mega man game with a magical girl skin.

While a lot of the characters from the first game return, their levels and the way they play is very different.

I feel like this game is significantly easier, and maybe more aggravating than the original. There aren't too many pixel perfect jumps, and the sadism in this one seems toned down. I'd say the biggest difference between this and the first one is that you basically only have special weapons. You need to maintain weapon energy or you're kinda screwed. the game is very generous with the weapon energy though.

pretty much everything that was in the first game is in this one in some way shape or form mechanics wise, but there are many improvements.

As a hardcore mega man fan, this game is pretty awesome. If you like mega man games, this is for you. If you don't like mega man games, stay far away from this, this is basically an NES mega man game with an extra layer a sadism on top.

The game features familiar elements from Mega Man 1-6 remixed. It will feel very familiar to fans of the series, but will also throw in new elements and twists to trip you up. the level design is okay, with a lot of traps you won't see coming or won't be able to react to. if you persevere and complete the game, and know everything that's coming, it becomes a rather enjoyable replay. Just be ready to die a LOT, and pro-tip, stock up on E-Tanks.

The game makes a lot of references to other games besides Mega Man 1-6. There are also Mario and Castlevania references. The weapons besides bombs are all very intuitive to use, and useful in stages. The bosses mostly are sort of remixes of classic mega man robot masters. for example, one is basically toad man, but at half health, the battle will change to be harder.

It's basically a mega man game skinned with magical girls.

MN9 gets a lot of flack for reasons outside of the game.

most people complaining about the game are complaining that a small studio didn't make a AAA game, or that it's hard like classic mega man games. There are also mega man fans who dislike it because it's pretty far removed from a typical mega man game.

the graphics are fine, you can clearly distinguish between enemies and your character. I wish the sword had a little more range or was clearer how far you're hitting. I had a lot of situations where I whiff enemies because it's hard to judge distances in 2.5D.

If you don't like classic mega man games on the standard difficulty, this game isn't for you. it is full of the same elements as your typical classic mega man game. insta-death spikes, pits of death, tricky enemy placement, etc.

Now, that doesn't mean you will like it if you're a classic mega man fan. Like how Mega man X games don't feel like classic games, Mighty No. 9's mechanics make the experience far removed from your typical classic mega man game. Mighty No. 9 is designed for fast and brash gameplay. it discourages playing it safe and shooting from a distance. You want to be up close to enemies so you can dash into them as soon as they weaken.

you're scored based on not taking damage, and absorbing enemies quickly. and if you wait too long, bosses recover their health. it's designed to force you out of your comfort zone and get close to enemies. You'll want to keep track of how many shots it takes to weaken each enemy if you want to rank high. there is no reason to rank high though.

Another difference from typical mega man games, is that there are no health drops, health must be found or are given by living backpacks. the game expects you to play near perfect, especially if you try to play as Raychel.

It's a solid game, with a lot of potential. but unfortunately, due to the issues that surrounded the game's development, we'll never see another game. Mighty gunvolt burst does come close, but I would really love for this series to continue.

[Edit 12/18/20]

Hardcore mega man fan. As the game is okay, nothing to write home about, but you can have some fun with it.

I managed to play the game on a powerful PC capable of running the game smoothly. Don't try to play this game with an integrated graphics card. If you're not playing this on some sort of gaming rig, you're in for a bad time. Even with all the settings down low, it will not play right. If you can't get access to a machine with it's own graphics card, avoid it, you won't really be able to play it. The graphics seem to be intensive.

Now For a review with is fully playable at normal speed. it's okay, but not $20 okay. If I were to put a realistic price on it, I'd say it's a solid $10 game. The devs are improving the game, actively, with nearly daily updates. So if you're interested, keep your eye on it, maybe wait for a sale, and see what the updates are.

[Controls]

the game when running correctly is very fast. the sense of speed is pretty good. Air dashing is a bit OP as you can pretty much circumvent most everything in this game by just dashing across the stage. wall jumping works okay, not great. in boss rooms, wall jumping can be unreliable at times. and trying to wall jump off bottom edge of a wall is kinda janky. you might just conclude that you cant do it, but it is possible.

The game does little to nothing to explain anything to you and hopes that you just know what you're doing. special weapons can be charged, and the ice weapon is your utility weapon. charging it up gives you a wall that you can climb up and jump off of, allowing you to skip even more of the level.

[Camera]

The camera has been greatly improved since the game's first release. It's at a fairly comfortable distance now. Good Job Devs. Now if only the camera wouldn't let you see past the boundries at the start of the stage, or any other boundries. There are a couple spots that just have invisible walls.

[Challenge]

I spent most of the game dashing and spamming the basic buster. that gets your through most of the levels, with the occasional platforming. like 60% of the game is a zig zagging downward drop, where you go from left to right, with occasional enemies or obstacles. it makes the levels feel very samey. you generally run forward and shoot, or air dash from small platform surrounded by spikes to the next getting hit by whatever flying enemy is to close to respond to, or you're going down a zig zag drop. there are sometimes different parts that were kind of fun, but the rest was the same thing with no real difference, even the same enemies most of the time which you can mostly ignore.

You won't die in the stage unless you slip up and touch an insta-kill hazard. Enemies respawn almost the instant you turn your back, and health drops are plentiful, so you can farm health super easily.

The bosses have been improved since release. Most bosses will attack you in the corner, but I found that the fire boss can still be cheesed by staying in the bottom left corner, and the mosquito boss can be cheesed in the upper right corner.

you have special attacks, but all they ever did for me was make the game jankier. I used a rage attack against a boss and it not only did no damage to them, but I was stuck facing one direction until I took some damage.

[Cutscenes]

There are three skippable cutscenes in the game. All boss dialogues and cinematics must be viewed over and over again. When you make a short replayable game akin to the mega man series, you make every single cutscene skippable. sometimes players don't care about the story, sometimes they die and have to re-enter the fight. Having to watch all the cutscenes over and over again every time you play is a major hassle and hurts replayability.

Allow us to skip all cutscenes and boss dialogues. You can't even speed up the dialogue, nor slow it down, it goes at it's pace.

[Graphics]

The art is okay, models are fine, Things are decently easy enough to distinguish from each other. The art in the dialogue boxes aren't too great though. it would be better to replace it with a 3D model, as your assistant looks pretty terrible in them, and those dialog boxes are opaque and take up half the screen while you're playing. These dialogue boxes should be transparent, and maybe optional with the use of the "select" button.

Overall, the game is pretty sloppy. it feels like a beta product. There's some good stuff, and some boss fights are enjoyable. the stages are mostly boring though with like 2 interesting ones. it's getting better, but feels like I'm playing early access.

The game can use some improvement, but it has potential, and if the series were to continue, it might become a true successor to the Maverick Hunter X games. I can't recommend this game for $20. That's a steep price for what the game is. There are many way better for that price, like Azure Striker Gunvolt 2. Gunvolt 1 is a much more solid game than this, and the asking price for that is $15.
