Great game that requires good situational awareness and teamwork to win. Best chance of joining a pickup game is on Sundays around 3 pm EST, sometimes Saturdays as well.

Different ships, tech paths and roles within a game make it fun and accessible for different playing styles. Sometimes you just want to scout and have a relaxing game, other times you prefer to pad your kill bonus in an interceptor, or hunt miners in your stealth fighter, or go as a team to galv an enemy base, or prox mine an aleph (chokepoint) to prevent the enemy from entering your sector... and a hundred other scenarios that require skill and proper timing. Oh and also you can become the Commander and plan and coordinate all of this!
