A well done, truly F2P MMO set in one of the most revered universes of all time. If you like Star Trek, this is for you.

I played one round and immediately bought it as a gift for someone else, and have been rounding up friends and coworkers to play with. This is amazing.

Read past to my latest edit, dated for November 17th. I am preserving my previous review for posterity.

This is a post 2.1 review.

Before Thursday, May 26th, 2016, I would have recommended this game in a heartbeat to anyone who liked trucking, space combat, exploration, beautiful artwork, and just an all-around good time.

Now, there are too many gamebreaking issues that deleted Tweets and snarky forum responses that claim "all is well, and working as intended." The most deadly NPC units coming after brand new pilots. NPC vessels having access to equipment that doesn't exist for players. And the implementation of a new grind that was advertised as being only for those seeking an edge, which is actually required to remain relevant in the game. Do not buy this game until a patch for 2.1 is released.

Update: It seems they have fixed most of the issues with a server patch, with another client-side patch on the way to fix the issues that couldn't be remedied server-side. This is the upside of Frontier Developments: they pay attention.

Update 2: Frontier inadvertently revealed, in a conversation with community leaders, that fixing the code (patching mechanics) often leads to "chaotic, unanticipated consequences", and that they "don't have the funds or time to maintain proper programming practices" (I'm quoting). Do not buy this game.

Update 3: people on the forums and subreddit are pleading for people to change their reviews, to get the aggregate score up to ~75%. If people suddenly have a change of heart, that may be why. Frontier Developments are promising more fixes, and they do follow usually follow through. I'll continue to update this review.

November 17th Update #4: Now that the problems and bugs of 2.1 have been largely repaired, and since 2.2 has dropped, I can once again recommend this game.

In fact, I do so STRONGLY. There is a far more substantive mission system, the AI is no longer cheating, and big features like the Engineers have been around long enough that it is fairly simple to work your way through them, and there are plenty of community members who can also assist now.

My brother and I played this back when it was still very much alive. If you ever played a space combat sim, you felt right at home. If you liked Counter-Strike, CoD, BF, etc, you felt right at home. If you like both of those genres, which we did, this was your Nirvana. It's a shame the game died, but I'm not reviewing the player base.

Good driving mechanics, races aren't a pushover, and the AI knows what it is doing. The man on the radio can give you misleading information, but overall, I'd play this over most NFS games.
