This game surprised me! I tried the demo and thought it'd be worth my time to try this one out as I love witches and old school style FPS! As I am writing this review the game is still in Early Access, but honestly for what I paid, it is worth the money just for the first episode alone.

The gun play and spells are fun to use, but in my opinion some of the lighting still needs work and I couldn't really use the MP-40 in this game to the full potential as I would end up giving myself a headache after a while so maybe a setting on how rapid the flashing is with the muzzles or something like that would be a lovely thing of the developer to add in for fellow migraineurs and epileptics!

Otherwise I liked the story and it is nice to see badass female protagonists in FPS games.
I recommend this game if you enjoy old school FPS with an interesting twist!

Recommended only because I loved the first game and played this through because of that.

I won't sugarcoat it, the game needs a lot of polish and to be honest if you want to experience a proper old school feeling shooter play Ion Fury, the first game instead.

This game... I want to say that I enjoyed it at parts. Some fights were extremely fun, but many times I couldn't help but giggle at how the AI got stuck to the simplest of things and actually sometimes wouldn't even notice fighting alongside their other AI companions only being alerted towards me when I shot at them.

The graphical presentation is beautiful, but I don't know if it was sound glitches or what sometimes sounds would cut off and Shelly wouldn't react to being shot. No pain grunts or scream. I felt like when I died it was mostly of something unfair than in Ion Fury I felt like if I died it was my mistake for not learning what the AI does and how it responds to my moves. There were lots of other glitches too especially when I was trying to find my way in the world and ended up breaking the game just by trying to explore more.
Some assets were up in the air. Like a lamp post or some rubble, but I know those can be fixed and polished later on. I see the vision of the developers, but I do feel like this falls short from an experience standpoint.

I had moments where I was lost in the levels wandering and trying to find where to go and when I did find where to go I usually would be caught off guard by suddenly spawned enemies that just immediately yell out your name, run at you mindlessly and shoot while doing it.

Only thing that kept me going was the story. It is enjoyable and I love seeing more of Shelly's character.
I wish there were more lines she'd say, but that is just a minor complaint on my part.

TL;DR:
Graphics and story are fun.
AI path finding and overall experience with the game need polish.
Still enjoyed the game, but play Ion Fury if you want to have a better experience and a more of an old school shooter experience.

Wouldn't recommend this map. The environments are beautiful and the island itself looks gorgeous, but the bosses are unfair and not fun. Also getting the same issues as other players here. Freezing in certain caves giving a fatal error.

Play the base game or the other DLC's instead if you value your sanity.

But in all seriousness if you haven't played DOOM, you are missing out on a little piece of FPS gaming history.
Sure it looks dated by today's standards, but you got to remember that the game was revolutionary back in 1993 and 20+ years it has been loved by millions of people worldwide, so It is not a classic for nothing.

Give DOOM a go, I quarantee you won't be disappointed!

DOOM is a really legendary franchise, perfecting the First Person Shooter formula back in 1993 when it was released. Being a huge part of my childhood, when the new DOOM game was announced I was bouncing left and right, trying to contain my excitement. When I saw the first trailers and gameplay mechanics, I was kind of skeptical about how the new game will work off with health and ammo drops when you kill enemies, but to my surprise it works amazingly. Let me explain a little bit more.

So the new DOOM is what it tries to be, a new DOOM game for the new gaming generation. Based off the first two games of the franchise, DOOM and DOOM II: Hell on Earth it brings itself to the modern day really well. Gameplay is fast paced and full of action just like its predecessors. You can carry all the guns you pick up along the way and upgrade them through fighting hordes of demons or finding secrets to make your demon slaying even more gorey and effective.

Introduced new into the gameplay is the Glory Kill system, which will allow you to make a gorey kill move against any demon that you have done enough damage to and rip off their head, guts, heart or legs! There's multiple animations for these actions so you won't be seeing the same kill animation over and over again too often. Performing these kill moves on the demons makes them drop health and ammo for you to pick up making the killing smooth and fun with your guns or fists alike.

New enemies are introduced as well and I must say they fit to the DOOM franchise amazingly well and are a welcomed add to the bunch of the old foes that we meet along the way and God, don't get me started on the graphics. The environments in the game look really believable and beautiful to look at. I was in awe of the detail and beauty of the scenery wanting to explore everything you see along the way.

Which brings me to the secrets. They're scattered all over the game for you to find and they usually reward you really well from weapons to powerups, so exploration is always rewarded in multiple ways.

The game is challenging and fun to go through. Every difficulty from the old games are present and a new hardest difficulty Ultra-Nightmare is introduced as well. Never beat nightmare mode on the originals and I bet I won't beat them on this game either!

Even if I give this game a lot of praise, couple of things did bother me.

First off the Cyberdemon's design since the first trailer didn't leave a huge impact on me for being the most iconic DOOM monster in the series. The new redesign of the character makes him look cool, but not intimidating like he was in the originals. Even in DOOM 3 I felt intimidated by him. He was a rewarding boss in the old games, but for some reason I didn't get the same feeling when I beat him in the new DOOM. This is of course a personal opinion and I don't expect people to agree with me, but to me the big badass demon from the old games should have intimidated me and make me feel threatened at least once. This Cyberdemon didn't do it for me.

I love most of the music in the game, but some of the industrial metal setting does get a bit repetetive. There's some nice easter eggs in the music having snips of old DOOM songs here and there, but the industrial sound doesn't bring them out too well. It feels too much like Quake and that is not what DOOM's about. Quake is a great game series, but industrial metal in my opinion doesn't belong in DOOM. Good old rock 'n' roll and old school metal does. Again, my opinion and no one needs to agree with me.

Otherwise I'd say DOOM is a must pick for any DOOM fan out there and I personally would give the game about 8.5/10 rating myself. It's a great reboot of an old classic bringing the good old FPS action to the new gaming generation and who knows, get interested the old games as well.

I WROTE THIS REVIEW BACK IN 2012 WHEN I WAS 18 AND NOW REVISITED THE REVIEW, REWRITING IT COMPLETELY AFTER YEARS OF LEARNING TO UNDERSTAND MORE ABOUT GAMES.

As a huge DOOM fan myself when this game released, I of course waited for DOOM 3: BFG Edition to be released as soon as possible. Hearing that you get The Ultimate DOOM and DOOM II: Hell On Earth, DOOM 3, DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil and the new episode: Lost Mission, made me just want to get it immediately.

Anyway the game is not perfect. DOOM 3 has been made easier and more lit up than the original counterpart. Ammo and med-pack amounts have been increased while enemy amounts have been decreased making the overall experience watered down in comparison to the original. I would recommend playing the original release of DOOM 3 before playing this version. The Lost Mission is a fun expansion to play through and there is a great game underneath all these little changes, but to me it is not the way to play DOOM 3. The game was supposed to be dark and frightening and in my opinion it should stay that way.

Other than that the classic DOOM ports are not that great compared to the original DOS. They feel really rushed and not smooth at all to play through. This is the version where the infamous pill on the med-packs came from and I still don't like it. The green cross on the recent 2019 releases is a way better option than the ones used here for sure. One good thing at least is that you can use the WAD files to play the original games on modern fan made source ports if you didn't own the originals before.

Though, I still recommend for you to play the original games if you can get them. I mean they're like $5 dollars each, just get them instead if you want the classic DOOM games.
