This game can be a serious challenge. But unlike other difficult games, this one will not turn you off.

PROS:

You got to place structures. That's fun, right? I'm not being sarcastic. I mean this. You can choose where to place them (with certain rules of course). Whether it's a combat RTS or an economic one like this, doesn't matter; how often do you get to do that these days? There's a very subtle Sim City feel beneath the surface, which someone of my age appreciates.

Smart play is rewarded.

It requires you to think. Yes, this is a PRO.

It was developed by a man who was an important piece of the Civ III and Civ IV team (say what you will about IV, but I'm one of the IV lovers, and III was fantastic).

CONS:

While billed as an economic simulator (and it is, that's not a fib) the Black Market mechanic I feel is a bit overused, and makes it seem like a low-key combat type RTS as a secondary. I wouldn't mind doing without it.

Learning curve. But don't let that scare you away.

If you like to use the Steam discussions forum, there's very little response going on from players, and the few who are regulars can get a little... bothersome sometimes. (But as a PRO, the man behind the game itself responds in the forums!)

In general, I am very pleased with this game. It might seem boring and too casual on the surface, but believe me, once you play it, you will see how exciting and tense things can get. Watch as you lose shares in your business! That's a big deal! Better secure your shares! Buy in to the competitors! But how? What can you produce for a profit? What can you ship? What can you take the hit on for having to purchase? You better decide what you can produce and what you have to buy, because if you try to do it all, you WILL FAIL.

I give it a 7/10. 8s with me are rare, 9s rarer still and the day I give a game a 10 that's been produced after the golden age of PC gaming is the day Hell freezes over, so my 7 means a lot more than you think.

My number 1 tip: Do not give up. Do not get frustrated. Accept when you screw up. There's always something to learn.

War Thunder is a grind simulator "F2P" where you quickly discover it is really "P2W." They like to tell you it's only "pay to progress," but when a game's only real point is to grind and progress, that is what "winning" is, in essence.

Massive problems with WT as a game:

1. Rigged matchmaking, in many subtle ways.
2. There's a memory leak that hasn't been fixed in years. If you play a long single session, most times you will get "Freeze detected!" when trying to exit.
3. Gaijin's new update agent is not malware per se, but it's obnoxious and unnecesarily difficult to remove.

Massive problems with Gaijin the company:

1. Russian businessmen. Self explanatory. They grew up in a Kleptocracy.
2. The main forums are policed by sycophantic fangirls who are instructed to mute and ban people at the first sign of criticism, especially if the criticism has anything to do with how bad Gaijin acts as a company or how obviously rigged and underhanded the game system is itself.
3. The Steam forums are ran pretty much the exact same way. Gaijin relies on a core group of very toxic players to act as their white-hat trolls to bully and attack anyone who does not fall in with the party line. These people have privileges to act nasty and trollish; if you retaliate in any way, no matter how small, you are muted and banned. They can break all forum rules as long as they are simply gushing about the game and bullying anyone with an honest criticism.

Gaijin mods don't understand how insensible they appear, either. They have instituted a "no medical references" policy, only because they got tired of seeing people refer to things as "cancer" or people as "autistic." While on the surface that seems fine, it also means if you are casually conversing with someone and say "last week I sprained my ankle," you are technically afoul of "no medical references." In that case, if the Gaijin selected mods already don't like you, they can go ahead and mute you, since you made a naughty medical reference...

Mods in the Steam forums, in the chats in the client and on the forums have made friends (and have no problem making it obvious) who they will support no matter what that person is doing. Some mods will actually partake in very obvious trolling. If you manage to have a dialogue with a mod that is not insulting but the content is something the mod has been directed by daddy Gaijin to never allow critique of, they will say "you are spamming chat" and mute you. It's their dishonesty that is low class. They can mute people if they feel, it's their right of course; but don't insult our intelligence with "you are spamming" when the truth is "you are insisting on a topic not open to discussion." Sure, it's still ridiculous, but at least it's honest ridiculousness.

But above everything else... The game itself is just plain rigged.

You are going to see very nasty replies to my review; Gaijin relies on a core group of trolls to drag down anyone who does not agree with them. I urge you, look past them. Do not give Gaijin your time or effort. Yes, I have over 2000 hours, but really sometimes I wish I did not. And even if it seems hypocritical to you, keep in mind, everything I have said here comes from someone who HAS over 2000 hours, and has been playing off and on since 2014. This is not the rantings of someone recent player who got mad at the first sign of inconvenience.

I forgot to mention, Tier V jet battles are a scam. I suspect Tier V in general is a scam, and it makes sense, since the worst thing that you can do to an F2P mess is reach endgame content.

If you insist on finding out for yourself, and insist on putting up with Gaijin's bullcrap long enough to get there, you will see what I mean.

This review was written by someone who plays 90% Air Realistic Battle. Ground Forces suffer from everything else I listed, but to an even worse degree.

This game's TRUE name is "Rigged Thunder."

After a while, you will start to notice how.

It's a goat simulator.

Do you really need another reason to get this?

It's TF2 meets CoD meets 4chan.

GET THIS!

I have a love/hate relationship with this game.

I love it for its complexity on story (and on that note, I must warn you, this is for people who like story A LOT). Each episode has its indivudal story but all in either a small or large way tie into one, overarching story. There's a lot of fanservice to those of us who are Law and Order fans.

The hate comes in, in that it's too short I feel. They insinuate that they may make more episodes, but it's been a while, and there's been no movement or new press releases on that front.

If you REALLY like Law and Order, and REALLY like games where you have to listen and pay attention, then this is for you. It's not for everyone, and that's OK.

A modern classic.

Storyline is a little silly but interesting.

Fans of AoE and AoE2 will enjoy the final (?) installment in the series. If you've put it off the past few years, don't put it off any longer.

The two expansions are rich and in spirit of the vanilla game.

Multiplayer, by the time of this writing, is somewhat dead but you can still find about 400 or so dedicated multi fans online at peak times.

Buy this.

well it's a console port, and sometimes sound glitches out in cutscenes... but the game itself is fun. I suggest waiting for a patch, or for the price to come down.
