Not a huge Warhammer lore nerd, but Space Marine 2 has piqued my interest in learning more about the various factions and chapters.

Playing the campaign with a friend who’s a Warhammer lore expert made it even more engaging, as he provided the context of battles and background lore, which really added to the experience.

Now, onto the gameplay.

For context, I hadn’t played Space Marine 1.

The campaign was really fun, especially with a buddy. It struck a good balance in difficulty (we played on hard), while still letting me revel in the power fantasy of being a Primaris Space Marine.

I particularly enjoyed battling the Tyranids far more than the Thousand Sons. Maybe it’s because the Tyranids moved in massive, satisfying hordes, with plenty of guts to spill. The Thousand Sons, on the other hand, just didn’t give that same visceral thrill. By the end, it almost felt like I was playing a different game. I wasn’t as engaged in the later stages as I was at the beginning, but I still had a good time.

Even though I didn’t really know the characters or feel deeply attached to them, I appreciated how they acted like true badasses and didn’t stop to talk about their feelings every 10 minutes (looking at you, Halo).

Now, the real bread and butter of Space Marine 2 is the operations, the endlessly replayable PvE mode.

Learning that it uses a similar director system to Left 4 Dead made me excited to grind for cosmetics and new weapons.

But... I have to say, even though it technically offers many customization options, by the endgame, everyone tends to use the same armor pieces. It’s hard not to notice that all the tacticals end up with the helmets with the plumes on top, for example.

There isn’t much room for individuality, though maybe that’s the point of being a Space Marine, if I understand correctly.

So forgive me for any heresy.

As for the PvP... I didn’t play it, and I’m not really interested in it.

But I can wholeheartedly recommend the game on the strength of the PvE aspects alone

After watching several bullshitery videos by SovietWomble, Space Engineers had initially drawn me in by the sheer scale of the sandbox.

And having almost infinite possibilities on what to create and where to create it, it had me intrigued.

Specially after No man's sky has left me wanting more, since that gameplay loop didn't cut it for me.

However, like no man's sky, this game's onboarding is just bad, there is no real way to learn how to play in game, the tutorials don't really teach you the basics and by the time I started playing, I was just lost.

The tutorial throws you into a space station under attack (at least, I think it was), makes you push a few buttons, then throws you out a drop pod into a moon, makes you walk (or fly) to base where you push more buttons and walk...

Like why? Does the game have lore that’s so important it needs to be forced into a tutorial? How about just teaching me the core mechanics first?

This game's tutorial is the perfect analogy to our education's system.

How do I build a ship? The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell

I tried looking at external sources, but by that time I was already annoyed due to the unintuitive UI.

I felt discouraged by how much effort it took just to just figure out the basics.

Which is a shame, I really did want to learn it, it's such a cool looking game.

However, the game seems to demand that you invest multiple hours to just to know what to do, and not even in an intuitive way.

I know some might say that the game doesn't have to be for everyone, and I agree.

But I am not asking for the developers to make it simpler or take out the complexity.

I am simply asking to be taught. A well-structured, hands-on tutorial would go a long way in helping players enjoy the complexity this game has to offer.

Excellent.

The time management gameplay is the best part of the game, as is spending time with your teammates.

The combat gets a bit boring towards the end, especially against enemies that have no elemental afinities, where the game becomes a battle of attrition.

Played it on hard
