In my opinion, there's just too much that's lacking that doesn't allow me to give the game a thumbs up. A lot of negatives have been highlighted and explained thoroughly in other reviews but these are the ones that really frustrate me the most.

1. Sector System : I really dislike this system. You can initially control 5 planets at the start and the cap increases when you research technologies. As you control more and more planets, you have to delegate control to Sectors, and Sectors have NO CAP WHATSOEVER ! Doesn't it sound very weird in the 1st place ? If I can't manage 10+ planets myself, I will naturally delegate control to the Sector AI, but why must you force players to give up control ?

2. Technology Tree : This is another part of the game that's done poorly IMO. There are 3 categories of Technology trees, namely Physics, Society and Engineering. However, what you can actually research is purely RNG-based. 3 random technologies (4 after researching a Tech) are given as options after the previous tech was researched and there's actually no planning whatsoever involved. You've just gotta pray the Tech that you actually want will appear as an option. This is actually very frustrating especially for the Engineering tree where weapons are researched. Most of the time the weapons I've researched are barely used at all just because I'm forced to pick the lowest cost Tech to have another roll on RNG for the next batch of Tech options.

3. Alliance & Federation : IMO this part seriously needs a revamp. Often times Alliances means nothing to the player other than slowing down a player's galaxy conquest. In order to declare war on others while in an Alliance, you have to get approval from the other party and most of the time they will reject your proposal. Similarly while in a Federation, you can declare war non-stop without needing any approvals while being the LEADER, which means EXTREMELY LONG downtime between wars whenever you're not the Federation leader. On the other hand, if you go solo, you have to go 1v5 or 1v10 often since everybody else is hiding in a Federation.

and the list goes on and on....

This game will probably be improving on its various lacking parts in the foreseeable future. For now though, it's not worth it.
