All I wanted was Risk of Rain 1 with remastered music, and higher quality animations.
I got all that and more!

Look the game is fun. The mechanics are interesting, but not fully baked.
However, this game is one of those meta-narrative games.

The spoiler free tldr: The overall story is aggressively mediocre and kinda trite. I beat the game solely for the mechanics and see how they evolve as the game went on.

To explain why I don't recommend the game I'm gonna have to talk spoilers a little bit.
I will break up this review by the severity of the spoilers that I will be talking about.
If you don't want to read the spoilers, please don't read the rest of this review.

If i could give a neutral review I would, but since this game has "Overwhelmingly Positive" reviews I am gonna have this review be negative.

Ok so minor spoilers:
The live action stuff in the trailer that's meta-narrative and its your dime a dozen video game creepy pasta from late 2000s to early 2010s. In my opinion: Its honestly meh, not that interesting and predictable. It's serviceable but not anything to write home about.

Next the rest of the promotional material (except a quick flash) is all act 1.

The game does have an endless act 1 rogue-lite mode called "Kaycee's Mod" you unlock it for beating the game or inputting a cheat code in the main menu.

Less minor spoilers:
Act 2 is a pve digital tcg and act 3 is like act 1 but its deckbuilding dark souls (you reach waypoints limited resources refill, if you die you go back to the last waypoint you went to, enemies respawn, and all your currency is dropped where you died).

Now that sounds great on paper in practice its just ok.

Half the cards in act 2 I never used because their mechanics are a lot of set up with little pay off.
If their mechanics were reworked act 2 gameplay wise could stand on its own.
As it stands it works and is ok.

Act 3's cards you can modify in act 1, but takes some of the not great mechanics from act 2.
Act 3 is act 1 but less baked by a lot and seems to be that way to serve the aggressively mediocre meta-narrative.

To explain why I must get into major spoilers:

Act 2's weakest mechanics were the wizards/gems and the energy and circuits.

To explain for those who have not played the game:

beasts: basically act 1's cards. Sac creatures to play other creatures
undead: bone tokens from act 1. Each time your creatures die you get a bone token so then you can use bone tokes to play other creatures. While you would think this would lose out to beasts, it doesn't with certain cards that are core to its deck.

wizards/gems: you need to have a gem on the field to play cards with that gem in the cost, you can play any number of cards costing that gem.
problem you can lose gems so they lose out to the beast and undead cards where you don't really lose resources like that.

Energy: Works like mana in hearthstone, but caps at 6. You can't get big combos out as quickly as beasts and undead
Circuits: To much set up for little pay off compared to beasts and undead.

Act 2 mechanic wise has some good ideas for fun card game mechanics, but they need a little more time in the oven and rebalancing.

Now to talk about act 3, I will again have to discuss major spoilers.

Act 3 is all of the energy and circuit cards from act 1.
I'd rather not play hearthstone in the game that was advertised to play similar to brutal yugioh.

Act 3 as it goes on makes the mechanics more complex and engaging, and even takes the wizard/gem mechanics from Act 2 and makes them work better. But at the end of the day it is still aggressively mediocre.

I beat the game solely to see how the mechanics evolved in each act.
If you are that desperate for the story, go to youtube.
The story is the weakest part of the game and holds the game back.
Which is why I'm pretty neutral on the game, "Kaycee's Mod" is nice, but it feels too little to late.

Conclusion: The dev should have focused on the mechanics of one of the acts and fleshed them out more and did something else with the story.

Edit: After clearing all challenge levels of "Kaycee's Mod". I can safely say that it is definitely too little to late. "Kaycee's Mod" while nice highlights the issues with act 1.

People complaining are whiny babies.
The dlc is a challenging ride that makes the game almost like a survival horror game especially on higher difficulties and hardcore.
It's honestly the best dlc in terms of storytelling, especially background storytelling, and gameplay.

Finally the bomb caller is not that bad you just gotta be quick and pay attention.

It's free, has a high skill ceiling with no end in sight. This game is quite good and is a masterpiece. If you have steam there's no reason to not give it a go. So do so!

I found this game fun and quite enjoyable if not very stressful. The game is very slow as you slowly trudge around the ship and choosing you best route through the ship and knowing which doors to seal behind that overal gives a slow and methodical feel to it. The game isn't high octane action its slow and methodical. The game does its best to give a faithful and accurate way space marine in Terminator armor would feel to play very slow, very tanky. The design of the ships you explore are breathtaking. I understand why this game isn't for everyone, but if your interested in a slow and tense shooter experience that somehow still makes you feel powerful this game can easily fulfill that, if not that's ok.
