Early Access Review
There is nothing quite like mud and blood. I've played mud and blood 1 and 2 but the steam version brings it to another level. Mud and blood on steam is chill yet intense; casual yet seriously tactical; easy to learn yet difficult to master. Buy it and experience unfair random brutality of war from the POV of a commander for yourself.

In war, even the most grizzled veteran will die to a bullet. In mud and blood it is the same. A fresh soldier out of training will die just as easily as an experienced veteran. Men will die. It's your job as commander to ensure those deaths are not in vain. You'll be constantly pushed to the cerebral limit and asking yourself "What resources do I have" and "How can I make the best of it". Or don't do that at all it's up to you. But know that carelessly made decisions would likely result in the loss of your squad.

In Mud and Blood (Steam) you can play a campaign mode that starts at the shores of D-day and ends after you liberate Germany from Nazi rule. I thought it was a really good addition compared to mud and blood 2. No longer are we camping out and defending. Now we bring the fight to the enemy. In v0.4.3 as your squad gains exp the enemy becomes progressively better shots. Commanders have to determine which roles in the squad are vital to mission success and which roles are not. It's really sad to decide on which lives are more valuable then others and consciously place valuable troops in the safer back-lines. However that is the reality and indifference war has on the situation. Overall, I would say that I am satisfied with the campaign. I would suggest that player should be able to have access to more than 6 men. Commanders may "store" veteran men in waiting who don't participate in the patrols. The idea is to give commanders a way to "grow their section". Difficult mission ahead? Send the new guys and not risk older units in the patrol.

Another mode on Mud and Blood (Steam) [MnBS] is classic or defense mode. Mud and Blood 2 veterans would be familiar with this mode. The commander is awarded "tactical points" (TP) for waves of enemies survived. Your job as commander is to best utilise your TP to survive waves after waves of enemies. However, Mud and Blood (Steam) features a far longer playing field much to my delight. Defense is no longer just a game of "how many explosives can you stack at the enemy spawn". I have found that real world military tactics can be applied in MnBS. An example would be to create deep layers of trenches similar to what we have observed in the Ukraine war or historically in WW1 when Germany was on the defending side. Overall, this mode is still under development so It's difficult to review it. Currently, I would say that the game-play can be really unfair and random at times. I died mostly due to breaching the 6 man limit. I feel that the limit could be set to 8 men instead to give commanders more wiggle room. At the game's current state, the need for 5TP nets to hide your units becomes borderline oppressive to commanders trying to experiment with new ideas. Lowering the cost of nets could made game-play more enjoyable too.

Apart from game-play, I have also found the menu music to be really good. It gives a sense of heroism and yet melancholy simultaneously. It feels like the anthem of the reluctant heroes going to war possibly not coming back again. It would be helpful if the sound could be adjusted via slider rather than in 4 intervals. The UX of navigating from a game to the MnBS home screen could be worked on as well as of v0.4.3. I also think that a proper guide book should be included in-game. New players would be forced to go to the MnB wiki to learn the game. However, these are just minor issues that can be easily resolved. They do not diminish the fun of game-play.

I would highly recommend MnBS to Mud and Blood veterans and any new potential commanders out there. You can also join the mud and blood discord group where the game's developer read your suggestions and improves the game.
