Short and sweet can best sum up this free gem. While the game is entirely singleplayer, the gameplay can easily be translated to a nice one on one multiplayer game. The devs really did a good job with this game but its a real shame it barely reaches an hour of play.

Valkyria Chronicles has to be of the most underappreciated games to come out during the 7th generation of games. This game is an experience with its amazing cast of characters, world building, music, and story that carries the player to the human side of war. While the game's plot borrows a lot of concepts from World War 2 such as genocide, weapons of mass destruction, expansionism, and continental turmoil, the developers did a superb job conveying them in way that is not overwhelming to the player. As cliche as some of the anime tropes can be, i just can't stop but wanting to cheer for characters like Welkin overcome the challenge of leading a small squad to tackle the Imperials. The plot twists and even supplementary side missions add so much to an already story rich game.

As someone who hasn't delved much into strategy games, i found VC challenging but fair. Sure, the scouts are absolutely overpowered and some aspects of the map design offer a lot of room for cheap strategies, the game does offer a lot of depth when it's being played as intended. My one downside however that i cannot overlook is how the PC port does have some bugs. While not at all game breaking, you should keep in mind that movement and collision can be impacted depending on your framerate. One example being Chapter 18's Marmota platform.

I can absolutely recommend this game to anybody who is looking for a compelling story and would want to start out with strategy. Even if the anime aesthetic isn't your thing, you should absolutely give this game a fair shot.
