Oh boy, time to update the crappy review I wrote years ago.

tl;dr -> It's a fun building game with lots of stuff to play with, and a strong pick if new to Steam.

OVERVIEW...
Garry's Mod is a sandbox (duh) with simple controls. If you're the creative type and enjoy building, taking screenshots, posing, and those kinds of things, then by all means, get this game. It goes on sale pretty often, and when it does, it's dirt cheap. Don't hesitate to wait and buy the game another time if money is an issue.

The workshop is your primary source for new content. As for the modding community, it's quite active. There are always new mods being pumped out regulary. There's a huge variety of mods to choose from: maps, weapons, vehicles, models, tools/utilities, gamemodes, etc.

When I say gamemodes, I mean that over the years, talented mod authors have brought along new ways of enjoying this game outside of its intended role of building. A few examples would be prop hunt, hide and seek, and roleplay. I lack experience in these; therefore, I am unable to say much more.

AS FOR GRIPES...
1. Some mods rely on content from other games which need to be purchased and mounted. The most common games are Counter-Strike: Source and Half Life 2 Episode 1 + 2.

2. Managing mods with friends can be a royal pain in the neck because everyone needs the mod in order to use it properly.

Failure to comply with either of these two will result in errors/missing textures.

3. Some mods have backdoors because some people are just scumbags. Being aware of what mods you install is the only counter.

CONCLUSION...
As for my verdict, I do recommend this game. It's not perfect, and it has its flaws. Despite that, I still consider it as one of my best investments ever. It was one of my first games, and I have fond memories of the shenanigans I've shared with friends. Even now, I find myself occasionally returning to the game to unwind and do whatever I want; I foresee myself returning time and time again in the future as well.
