Pros
> Distinct, high-resolution pixel art style.
> Massive variety of builds and classes to pick from.
> Simple and satisfying endgame loop.
> Easy-to-understand and easy-to-get-into market and trading.
> Has an alternative gamemode - odyssey - for those who prefer to play alone and without the market.
> Frequent updates with exciting seasonal content (not counting sub-seasons used in case the next season is taking a lot of time in the making)
Cons
> Little to no crafting
> Performance issues when playing projectile-heavy characters
> Heavy reliance on the official discord server for class builds/tips, announcements, technical support, etc.
> Lots of doomers in the community
Personal review
After having played the game for a fair bit, I can confidently say that Hero Siege is a steadily growing masterpiece for casual and semi-casual players seeking fast-paced gameplay with a number of activities to do. The purchase I made has been worth every penny, every season is a fresh experience that includes either new permanent mechanics, classes or their reworks.
If you are a PoE or even a Diablo player, give this game a shot - you won't regret it. Is it better than Diablo 4? Absolutely, but is it better than PoE 2? Probably not, but comparing these two games is futile given how different both of them are. If you still have any doubts in your mind about buying the game, let me clear them up for you because I'm this sure you've been bothered by the mixed reviews.
1. "The game is riddled with purchasable items". While it is true that the game has a lot of monetization involved (classes, skins, inventory slots, stash slots, a dlc, etc.), there are frequent sales that allow you to buy all of those at VERY low prices. Calling it "pay-to-win" is completely missing the point: it is not required at all to play or even enjoy the game, however I highly recommend getting the game with the DLC for a full experience. On a sale, of course. Keep in mind that the main studio of PAS is located in Finland, where prices for everything are ridiculously high, which is the main reason the extensive monetization exists.
2. "The game has been completely replaced! It's not the same HS I remember or even bought!". If you are worried about such reviews, don't worry: most of them are nostalgia tripping about the first rendition of hero siege, 1.0, and how it was essentially "deleted", which it wasn't - hero siege 1.0 is still available in the betas tab of the game in your steam library.
3. "The developers are rude bastards". The team is comprised of a small indie studio, PanicArts, the developers of which are (almost) complete memelords - most of what they say in discord in public chats (like #general) should be taken with a grain of salt and not at face value. Oh yeah, did I mention that the main developer, Elias, tends to share various sneak peeks in there? :jotunnGreedy:
Overall, the game is in a really good shape and continues to grow with each season. Regardless of whether you played other similar ARPGs or not, you'll have a fantastic time with Hero Siege and its expansive content. My overall rating: 9/10
