This game is at the exact opposite side of that opinion. In this game story is not just expected to be there. This game is the story, and the story is the game. This game tells the long story of the Obra Dinn, with static cutscene and a short narration, like the famous quote "For Sale, Baby Shoes, Never Used.".

p.s. Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting that Carmack is wrong. I also enjoy games that is not related to story whatsoever, like R6 siege and Doom reboot. I'm just saying there's a genre that focuses on storytelling the most.
