I really have to care about a game to dedicate the time to write a steam review that's more than a couple sentences.

Firstly, CK3 as a base game is still fun and probably the most approachable iteration of ck made thus far. Royal court succeeds in making ck3 more fun to play, but that is where its success ends. Royal court adds very little content and none of it brings any meaningful changes to how you play ck3. Culture sees the most notable improvement and brings some solid RP mechanics, even if it only really manifests as additional opinion modifiers. The new events are much welcome but they don't alter the gameplay loop at all and the same events appear far too frequently, just like when the game launched. Intrigue is simultaneously the most useful character focus while remaining the most frustrating, since it ensures you'll get a notification once a month that some random countess is humping her court bishop, or that your marshal had a random courtier assassinated 20 years before your current character was even born. The court visualizer was a promising feature, but it feels like they dedicated far too many resources to visualize something that could have been portrayed just as well with 2d artwork and some descriptive text. Nothing has been done to address the incompetent AI, but at least I know Kaiser Henry the fourth has a "stinky court."

Speaking on more than just the DLC's additions, ck3 does a very poor job of simulating any government type other than feudal, and even then their feudal government type is applied far too broadly. The expansion introduces no unique administration systems for the ERE or the (non-existent) nomads, nor does it offer a proper iqta or republic rework. Republics remain nonfactors and are still not playable. In my 300+ hours since launch I have not once seen a republic such as venice or pisa attempt to expand their realm. Compared to its most recent predecessor, ck3 still stale and predictable, especially after your first 50-80 years as a ruler. Regardless of your ruleset, the AI is incredibly passive and the only challenge for someone that is familiar with the game's mechanics comes in the form of arbitrary law/succession restrictions that bring no meaningful difficulty and just makes new playthroughs feel like a slog as you wait 200+ years to institute primogeniture. Mongols are still the only plausible challenge you'll face after your first 3-4 rulers, but from my experience they still collapse before stretching beyond the Caspian.

I'm having some fun with my current playthrough, but once I wrap that up, ck2 with HIP will remain my preferred way to play crusader kings.
