Haven't had this much fun since tf2.
Movement feels like Halo.
Gunplay feels like quake/doom.
Benefits greatly from pre-existing experience with portals - you also have a jetpack for added height and resultant portal exit velocity (which you can accumulate indefinitely since the jetpack energy regenerates when not in use).

Edit: I didn't know how to describe this game for the longest time but now I do - this game is probably what Metal Gear Solid would feel like in first person.

Warframe VR on steroids, and it's kino af

This game will make you regret skipping leg day.
This game also requires solid set of VR legs so you don't get motion sickness.

Some assembly required - to achieve the full (and intended) gameplay experience, like sliding, frontflips, backflips, sideflips, auto-slowmo while sliding/flipping, etc.

Prepare to spend some a LOT of time in the settings menu.

Do NOT neglect this step, or you will:
1. Miss out on all the things that make the game unique
2. Risk experiencing unoptimized, crappy gameplay

A good example of (1) is sliding.

Sliding can help a lot with approaching targets while attacking.

Instead of you having to multitask, you can just slide and let the game move for you, while you prepare to activate slow-mo at JUST the RIGHT time, and only then begin to attack.. instead of you fumbling to move/attack/slowmo all at the same time.

The same goes for flipping - back/front/side-flips all have auto-slowmo (and also DMG buff), but they're tucked away in the settings, waiting for you to enable them.

P.S. I noticed I'm part of the 0.6% of players with the Death Acrobat achievement (100 kills while backflipping), even though I've only played 12 hours. Fiddling with the settings in this game is essential, all to allow you to do ninja stunts like this with ease.

Protip: for maximum kino, slash projectiles to deflect
Best used during sensory boost (i.e. hold down dash in midair) while the projectile is between you and your target. 'Reflect' skill is a MUST for full genji experience.
If target hasn't fired, KEEP DASH HELD until the projectile comes out, then left click that sucker (assuming projectile is close enough) and watch him commit (in)voluntary seppuku.

Ahh good ol' port 'problems'.

Keyboard controls and keybinding

For those of you familliar with rebinding keys in the days of PPSSPP/PCSX2 and/or playing ports like DMC3SE on PC with just a keyboard, rest assured - you'll feel right at home with this game.

For those unwilling to re-map their brains to memorize that left shift is L1 and spacebar is R1 and so on, for your own sanity, stay away. Stay FAR away from ANY game that was ported from a non-PC platform to PC. Also, stay away the ported game's guides/walkthroughs/tutorials, because they're all gonna probably be referencing the controller keys instead of the keyboard keys too.

CAPCOM did it this way with DMC3SE LONG ago and nobody complained - in fact, back in those days many of the crazy-fast combo maniacs that you often see in youtube dmc3 videos used keyboards and not controllers of any sort, simply because it was relatively easier to jump cancel in quick succession with a keyboard than with a controller.

Seriously, I don't see what the big deal is that could come from just taking 10 minutes to learn to set-up keyboard controls to mimic a controller, and THEN learning to memorize your own keyboard setup. All this 'controls learning' is a moot point if you already own an xbox/ps controller though.

All that being said, I do NOT recommend you start playing WITHOUT first rebinding the keys to something that feels natural for you relative to a controller layout (I rebound only 4 keys in total to feel like old dmc3 controls, and also having Q,E,F,R as default camera controls is just a bonus in my opinion, because in DMC3 I don't recall being able to rebind camera controls away from the arrow keys).

Mouse support?

Oh and before I forget, those of you complaining about the lack of mouse controls - where would you put the 4 attack/dodge functions tied to the keys for your right hand onto the mouse?

Sure, you could put dodge somewhere on the left hand (say.. Z key) and then you're left with the 3 attack functions - just nice for 3 mouse keys/clicks right? Wrong.

As a naginata/gauntlet user you end up having to spam your middle mouse button for your Special Attacks(circle key on PS4) - I'd instantly switch back to the keyboard just because of this.

Yes, games like Vindictus did it, but they didn't have a 3rd attack key. There were only L and R combos (left click and right click).

Indie game devs like the Japanese folks at Zenith Blue had the right idea - look at their Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae game.

In summary, lack of mouse functionality is less a technical 'problem' and more of a game design constraint:

Would you rather have 2 attack buttons (with combo variations limited by 2 keys) and precise camera controls with a mouse? (i.e. like Vindictus)

OR would you rather have 3 (or more) attack buttons (with a LOT more combo variations/combat scenarios) on the keyboard and 4 keys controlling camera movement (with adjustable speed)?

If you prefer stuff like Vindictus, then play Vindictus.. or wait for games like Black Desert Online.

30 FPS CAP oh god what do i do i can't 360 noscope with this

Please note that Toukiden Kiwami on PC has a hard framerate cap of 30 frames per second; hardcoded framerate == if you were to increase it, you end up hastening the game's physics cycles (i.e. time itself goes faster).

My opinion on the framerate cap is this - I can see it, I know it's bad/ugly, but I don't care; the game still responds quickly to my input regardless of the FPS cap and I'm able to time my dodges and parries with the same accuracy as what games like DMC4SE and DMC3SE has allowed me (look up DMC royal guard just guards and just releases, this is what you will do with the naginata and hammer counter-attack in Toukiden Kiwami - hint: that's your square+x attack).

In short, the game is framerate capped, but still responds instantly to your input regardless. If it doesn't your PC probably isn't beast enough to play this stuff.

The game won't start/crashes too much

I personally didn't get a single problem from the start of playing this game. Mind you I'm on Win7x64 running an i7 4790K along with a GTX 760 card running on 350.12 drivers (these drivers were released for GTA V), so your mileage may vary.

Now, with all that technical jazz aside, I can start talking about how much I love this game compared to the standard Monster Hunter games that came before this.

What I like about this game

  1. It's monster hunter on PC, what more need I say?
  2. The story - stories that each NPCs have, along with the ties to the main story and the bonds created with the player (Monster Hunter: what story? WHAT NPC STORY? LOL)
  3. NPCs you can bring into battle to fight for you (and issue separate orders) and revive you
  4. Dating sim-esque dialogues with said NPCs, along with bath house rewards ;) (MH: WHAT DIALOGUES?)
  5. The soundtrack (okay, MH and this one ties on soundtrack awesomeness in my opinion)
  6. The graphics/visuals - they're around DMC4's standards, so that's goooooood
  7. Pet tenko
  8. The lack of stupid paintballs and having to chase cowardly monsters halfway across the frickin' map.*
  9. The lack of stupid weapon sharpness maintenance and whetstones (and durability maintenance)*
  10. The lack of stupid potion/food crafting to maintain stamina/hp (HP/Stam bars do NOT degrade over time, and you're given about an average of 10 heals per game that are replenishable with prayer stones scattered across the map)*
  11. The lack of stupid fixed vertical camera angles that were widespread in standard MH games*

*Note: If you like the last 4 points, then good for you - stick with Monster Hunter.

What I DON'T like about this game

  1. That frickin' expensive price tag (but if you factor in the amount of content and Japanese lore they put into this game, even I'd be hesitant to put it anything below about 20 USD, but 50 USD? ..Damn)
  2. Slight bit of grind required to obtain mats to craft a full set of new armor, but hell I can't complain if they made the game fun to play (weapons like dual knives and naginata is pretty damn repetitive so they don't count as 'fun' - look at chain and sickle if you want my perception of fun)
  3. ~200 mitamas, each has 4 buffs when maxed, and you can equip 3 mitamas at higher weapon levels, then there's the bathhouse buffs, and the prayer box buff, armor buff, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ALL THIS THINKING HURTS - I'm just kidding it can take awhile to plan your endgame buffs is all
  4. Like MH, you still need to reference wikis and google sheets to know what materials drop where and how to obtain them and which parts to break

Since I take no issue with the controls or the 30FPS cap 'port problems', I'd have to recommend this game, but ONLY if you're filthy rich (or single) and can afford a 50 USD hit to your wallet.

Otherwise, wait for summer/christmas sales or some random weekend or Koei Tecmo sale (good luck with that - it took quite awhile for Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends to go on sale that's more than -33%, lol).

I loved this game so much I just didn't want it to end.

It'd be too soon to see the day when all games have visuals/art that look this sublime, and a matching soundtrack that sounds so hauntingly beautiful that I'd go through the game all over again, just to hold the 'sing/hum' button.

Transistor was such a relaxing game to play, but at the same time it was equally challenging (and interesting) too, as it kept things fresh by rewarding creativity, encouraging players to constantly change their style of play for every single encounter in the game.

That being said however, Transistor caters to both the completionist and the casual player.

Players who are willing to put in the effort and time to search every nook and cranny in the most remote corners of the game will be glad to know that the game rewards you with even more content to complement and enhance the overall story (equivalent to audio logs in Bioshock or emails/notes in Deus Ex:HR), whereas the more casual (or lazy) players won't be missing out on anything as none of these things are critical to the game's overall progression, and thus casual, or time-constrained players will be able to speed through the game with no problems other than missing out on part of the game's background lore (which can be retrieved via the internet/wikia/etc).

TL;DR:
Don't wait for a Steam sale to purchase Transistor; the price tag is almost equivalent to buying an average (read: AVERAGE) musical album out there, but this is a GAME that also has MUSIC that's so beautiful it's probably going to haunt you in your sleep (in a good way that is).

You get 2 QUALITY things for the price of 1, what more could you ask for?

I didn't even include the game's superb artwork in there, so you really get 3 things for the price of 1. Also, use headphones.

Plain, pure fun. Especially good if you want to take a step back from competitive and stressful games like L4D or DotA.
Not to mention the awesome feeling of taunt-killing someone. Yes you can kill people with your taunts in this game :D
