Most innovative shooter I have played in a long time, does something so simple yet refreshing with how the player handles weapons. Scratches that Tarkov itch without busting my balls for not playing every day for four hours. Doesn't take long to see all content, but that's fair given the low price. Very weird at times, has some short creepy sections. Looking forward to the sequel.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.

I was there when we liberated the Orion System from the Terminid Menace. With my sidearm's final magazine I killed a Brood Commander, it's green blood staining the soil I was lying in.

I watched orbital beams glitter in the dark on Malevelon Creek. With all hope lost, I called in an Airstrike on my own position, only for my fellow diver to clear a path, enabling me to escape in the last moment.

All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain...

Time to dive.

I owned a PSX and PS2 back in the day. Sometimes I get a flash of nostalgia and spend time setting up emulators and ROMs to play some old games I owned. But not for Wipeout, because I can just play this. It's basically perfect. The only thing that could be improved is the music, which is just "good", not genre-defining like the early Wipeout games. But other than that: 10/10.

If you are still confused about what you you actually "do" in this game, this short tutorial video should clear things up.

Hunt: Showdown is the best Battle Royale game out there right now.

This is a bold statement of course, but let me explain how Hunt fixes most of the gripes I have with other Battle Royale or "Survival as a match" games.

The Circle/The Zone/The Storm

In Hunt, there is no "Zone", no mechanic that forces players to be in a specific part of the map at a certain point. If you want to succeed in Hunt, you have to search for the AI controlled boss, leading to conflict with other players who also want to succeed. But the game never artificially forces you into a bad situation. You never (well, very rarely) go "damn, we got really unlucky with the zone this time."

Death and Revives

When you are downed in hunt, you cannot be shot down by regular guns. If the enemies want to finish you for good, they have to set your downed body on fire. And even if they do, you are not killed instantly, but rather, your remaining life points are burned slowly until you are out for good. All of this is balanced by the fact that you cannot move while downed, and that you permanently lose a chunk of your maximum health points when downed.

All of this achieves a few things:

* The enemies have to expose themselves and have to expend resources when they want to set you on fire
* A downed player can not go to full HP again, meaning downing someone will always give you an edge in an ongoing fight, even they are revived
* Finish a downed player is never instant, your teammates have time to react/pick you up

This also leads to a low level of toxicity in Hunt. Players are rarely finished, but fights rather draw out and often lead to interesting 1v1 or clutch situations.

Third party

There is a maximum of 12 players on the map - 6 teams of 2 or 4 teams of 3 players. With a bit of game knowledge, you can make reasonable assumptions about the position of every other team. If you want to engage another team but fear you might be third partied, don't. Wait for the other teams to duke it out and then sweep in for the easy kill. Getting into a bad fight is mostly your fault.

The guns

There are (mostly) no automatic weapons in this game. There is no getting sprayed down by a full auto no recoil assault rifle from 300m. There is getting instantly headshot, but that mostly boils down to you taking a bad fight or peeking a bad angle. Because of Hunt's weapons - Revolvers, repeating and single shot rifles, shotguns - fights are always about positioning. Good aim helps a lot, but a good flank will take the best player by surprise.

The bad

Not all is well in 1896 Louisiana. The loading times are insane - I can start, queue and play a few minutes of a game of Apex Legends in the time it takes me to just find a server in Hunt. The performance is so so, with a R5 2600x and a GTX 1060 I get ~70 fps at full HD and low settings (albeit very stable with usually no stutters). Missing quality of life features like loadout presets, and a repetitive player progression system (if you decide to participate in it).

But all of this are negligible downsides. What you get when you put up with them is, in my eyes, the most tactical and interesting shooter out there right now.
