Early Access Review
10 hours in and I can say that this is a sequel done right. Sons of the Forest is better than the previous, "The Forest", in every concievable way. If you like survival, horror and a huge massive map to explore - buy this.

A game worthy of legendary status

This game will go down as one of the greatest C/RPGs ever made. Future releases will be compared to it, but few will even come close. In a time where the gaming landscape is filled with incomplete, overly monetized and soulless trash, Larian delivers their best work to date. No day one dlc, no liveservice garbage and an actual functioning product on release.

This game is such high quality, it actually caused some people in the industry to have mental breakdowns evident on social media. Trying to tell us that "BG3 is too high quality" and we should temper our expectations for general AAA releases in the future. Hilarious

There hasn't been a PC RPG this good released since the original Dragon Age: Origins, in my opinion. If you like RPGs, stop reading this and go buy the game if you haven't yet.

My only complaints are some minor bugs, combat dragging and BS systems. To elaborate on the last two points, I just wish there was an option to speed up AI actions, like a fast forward. It can be really tiring watching around 20 npcs make their move before you do multiple turns in a row (though fights rarely get this big). To address the last point, almost everything in this game is decided by a dice roll. This can present some massively bs moments. Eg. walking into a room, failing a perception check and triggering a trap which can deal 50% of your hp. I found myself saving and reloading often in these instances.

More of a highschool dating/life sim than a deep RPG

If you want an rpg with a deep battle system, interesting story, character customisation and exploration - look elsewhere. The primary focus of this game is building relationships with different people and the somewhat interesting persona system.

The world is incredibly small and limited to about five different areas with not much to do in each. The "dungeons" are multi level randomly generated monotonous areas and have nothing going on in them. Only purpose of a dungeon is to find chests, fight monsters and get to the top floor - they (both) all also look the same. You'll notice I said BOTH - in my 20 hours of playing I only encountered two different dungeons.

The battle system boils down to guessing an enemy's weakness and then repeatedly using the same abilities over and over to exploit that weakness to cause a stagger once you find it. The battle system is made a bit more interesting by allowing you to take on "personas" to change your stats/abilities. These personas are random drops after battles and only a certain amount can be carried at a time (limit increases as you level up). You can only have one persona equipped at a time, but can change it once per turn in battle. It's easier to think of personas as pokemon, if you've played those games before - though your stats and abilities are your personas stats.

You can also get new and more powerful personas by combining different personas you own. Though only the main character can change personas, each of your party members are locked with their own unique persona and cannot be changed. The persona system would have been cooler if the battle system was more complex or had more going for it. Once you figure out an enemy's weakness, you just end up using the same abilities/rotation over and over. This is made worse by the fact you cannot disable battle animations. Watching the same 3 - 5 second animations over and over again became extremely annoying.

I'd also recommend using a guide as theres characters/events you can easily miss if you're not paying attention. Perhaps thats just me but I found out about stuff I had no idea about until I randomly read a guide at one point.

The soundtrack is a standout (though theres maybe only 5-8ish tracks) as well as the English dub.

Overall, if you want a deep RPG try something else. I'd only recommend this game If you think CRPGs are too hard, you're a turn based RPG babby, you're a weeb and/or like slice of life/high school romance anime.

Decided to check the game out after close to 10 years of absence. Last I played was around Moria/Mirkwood.

Like every other modern MMO, at some point the devs decided to drastically nerf the overworld content. Now its possible to solo elite/red mobs 2-5 levels higher than you along with multiple adds without your health going past 50%. I actually enjoy a challenge instead of instant gratification, so the game has become a boring faceroll now.

Look for something else to play if you don't want to feel like you're losing brain cells.

A perfect balance between room temperature IQ shooters like CoD/BF and the "so realistic its not fun/incredibly frustrating" type of FPSs.

Your HUD is limited and weapons are extremely deadly. If you run around like a dumbass, you will die - repeatedly. Coordinating with your team and squad is a must if you want to succeed. This is easy thanks to integrated VoIP with three levels of communication (Proximity, Squad and Commander). Theres also a chain of command similar to how Battlefield games used to work (pre bf3): Commander>Squad Leader>Squad member - each with their own responsibilities/abilities. The developers are also very active in their communication - regularly releasing free content, performance optimizations as well as fixing map imbalance.

If you want a shooter that requires teamplay and doesn't feel like you're losing braincells when you're playing it, you'll probably like this a lot. Especially if you think the modern bf games have gone down the toilet.

My only complaint is some optimization issues, though the devs have done a good job fixing these so far
