I exited this game feeling torn. I want to relish Limbo, as it has one of the most arresting visual aesthetic styles I've seen. However the gameplay and puzzles are more of a trial and error theme than my tastes generally tolerate. There are a couple perplexing moments that may slow you down a minute, but on the whole it really boils down to dying a few times before you realize where you're supposed to go. Beyond this there is the horror aspect, which rivals the likes of Amnesia. There are few things more disturbing than watching children take on a Lord Of The Flies approach to dealing with life, or more appropriately, Limbo. I can't say more without giving away too many spoilers, but rest assured you will be creeped the ♥♥♥♥ out at some points. The story and visuals will have your utmost attention, while the average puzzles will diminish the impact of those qualities. Engage at your own risk. 8/10

The Duke is back after 14 damned years, and his arrival seems like a celebration of mediocrity. Average shooting, average humor, average level design, and average graphics round out the list of ho-hum. Even playing as Duke with all of his quips and badassery just feels barely passable. This game feels somewhat more restrictive in its gameplay than the 1996 Duke Nukem 3D. How the hell is that possible? Although there are a couple genuinely brilliant moments that glimmer briefly in the sea of adequate, but those precious few instances do not merit the rest of the slog. Neither does Duke's tawdry behavior with all the bimbos. I'm as chauvinistic as the next guy but there is a difference between tongue in cheek humor and just plain stupid ♥♥♥♥. This title subscribes to the latter description. The years have not been kind to you, old friend. Your dated humor and attitude I can deal with. Your dated looks, ideas, and gameplay make me less than enthusiastic about your return. 5/10

Call of Pripyat stands as the apex of this series. STALKER has learned from its past transgressions and has given the player unbridled freedom to explore the vast wastes. Half of the fun is discovering all the awesome anomalies and unraveling how they work, and how exactly to grab the rewards therein. CoP is also the best of the bunch at telling its story. You can ally yourself with different factions and choose to help your fellow man, or just shoot him and take his gear. The mutants you face are more diverse and twice as frightening. There is no feeling of anxiety greater than a group of snorks hunting and chasing you through a sewer pipe as you blast and claw your way towards the dim daylight. Seriously, ♥♥♥♥ those snorks. 8/10

An alarming amount of work went into this game to make it one of the most captivating experiences of the year. The world feels alive and rich with activity. As you wander beautiful, but melancholy forests you'll hear wildlife twitter about you. Drunken guards make racial slurs at you as you walk by. You may see a couple of men accosting the local ♥♥♥♥♥. This game is packed with incindental detail, the sound effects are surprisingly good, and the voice acting is superb. The Witcher 2 forces you to take its mature subject matter very seriously. From racial intolerance to rape to incest, you will deal with a broad range of topics not intended for children. My one gripe is the combat. In my opinion it's improved since the first game, but it's far from perfect. Dodge rolls and cheap deaths abound. The visuals are wickedly stunning, but the optimization isn't great. So unless you have a beastly machine expect to run at mid-high settings. Gorgeous and macabre, this game is prime. 9/10

There is a lot to love about this game, but love is a fickle ♥♥♥♥♥ sometimes. RE 5 is the rebound girl after the love of your life broke up with you. In this case the lover in question is Resident Evil 4. Had you met the rebound girl before you found your true love, you know it would have been magical. The sad truth is that the poor dame is doomed to fail your impossible expectations, which were set so high by your previous flame. This game/woman is great with her phenomenal looks, and the new co-op feature is a step foward for the series. It's just too damned bad that the story is phoned in, and the voice acting retains all the cheesy goodness of a fresh quesadilla. Also, despite the series taking a much more action oriented approach to gameplay, RE 5 clings to its old control trappings. It depends on how you personally feel, but for me the controls were more of a hindrance to all the explosions and enemies attacking. Throw in a few cheap scares for nostalgia's sake. Thats RE 5. 7/10

AvP is sorta fun. Akin to trying to ignite your farts, it gets old after a few minutes. Although everything seems fine at first glance, it's not until you play the three classes that you notice how one dimensional the gameplay is. The devs did a good job coming up with three unique experiences, but they did a horrid job of refining them. The marine class has shooting that feels clunky and dumbed down, the predator class has stealth and melee combat that feels less than intuitive, and the alien class has a wall climbing system with fast movement and cool instakills. I had the most fun with the alien class by far, though all the classes have awesome kill animations. The visuals are appealing, mostly because the lighting system was done so well. Despite the unique mechanics attributed to each class, the game is very bland. The multiplayer plays just like the single player, where the players are limited to class restrictions and therefore isn't satisfying at all. Oh well. 5/10

Dead Space 2 is exactly what a sequel should be. More inventive, more gory, more action, more weapons, more everything... But something was lost in translation, because more = better, right? Well yes and no. For those of you who loved the original for its survival horror gameplay you may be a tad disappointed because Isaac's latest outing is a lot more action oriented. But just because it has more tumult doesn't mean it is less scary. On the contrary, Isaac is truly going insane and this game does a fantastic job conveying it. Isaac is no longer a Gordon Freeman acolyte, but now has dialog and it is actually good. For me, the biggest disappointment of the original was its storyline. It was cliched and a lot less interesting than the Ishimura. But with DS 2 they've expounded on the story and made it more engaging. Indeed, because of the storyline all the action seems relatable and necessary. Well done, Visceral Games! Everything about this game is extremely polished. Im out of room10/10

This was a triumph. I'm making a note here, "huge sucess"!... Truer words were never spoken. Portal manages to captivate with its brilliant mechanics and awesome character design. GLaDOS is one of the most entertaining villians of all time, and the setting is just as interesting. Antiseptic walls and atmosphere seem like the order of the day, until you get glimpses behind the curtain. Where those whitewashed walls give way to decay and scribbles from other test subjects. There is quite a lot of storyline here for those that wish to dig deeper, but the general gameplay will keep you playing through even after you finish the game. Portal will make you feel genuinely clever, and your I.Q. may just raise a few point if you finish all the challenge maps. This is one of those rare games that belong in a museum for being groundbreaking and ingenuitive. If you haven't played it then I pity you. 10/10

Borderlands is a terrific game, but it has a few flaws. The awesome graphical style is rather eye catching, as well as the Diablo style loot/reward system. Great enemy designs and weapon attributes are fantastic... for awhile at least. For all this title does right, it also gets a lot wrong. The NPC's and lackluster story do little to encourage you to keep playing. So after about 30 or so hours you'll have seen everything there is to see. I completed my single character to max level, but I didnt feel the need to start with a new one despite the different classes and abilities. All in all it is worth the price of admission, but Borderlands borders on boring fairly quickly. Best played with friends. 7/10

Irrespective of what your preconceived notions are of Braid, it is one of the best puzzle adventures you will ever play. The mind melting puzzles are very challenging at times, and keep you constantly changing the way you approach them. The diverse puzzles are filet mignon, and the gorgeous environments and sweeping score are the fine wine. The backgrounds pulse and shimmer as if they were alive, and it is all underscored by relaxing violin pieces. But all this wasn't what impressed me the most, no. What really made me fall in love with this game is the incredibly thought provoking storyline. What if all you fought and strived for was turned against you? What would you do and how would you feel? The story of Tim trying to save the princess is a metaphor for something much, much deeper. When I finished the final puzzle and saw the ending it blew me away. Simply amazing. This is not an action game, so if you're looking to blow ♥♥♥♥ up this isn't for you. I've gushed enough! 10/10
