Great story, however, as someone who has homebrewed D&D 5e to the point it's almost unrecognizable, I feel like the base ruleset is holding this game back... :/

You've played for 7330 hours. Would you recommend this game to other players?

Yes. If you have ever wondered whether Eve Online is for you, just try it. You can start playing for free in what's called Alpha status. Think of it as a demo version. You can do lots of stuff, you can feel out what you like and what you don't like doing, and then decide if you want to go Omega (which is the paid subscription that gets you double skill training speed and the ability to train into all the ships and modules the game has to offer).
Yes, the price increase kinda sucks but mostly if you up your subscription monthly. If you get longer subscription periods, the price is alright. Also, since the price increase, they have done a lot more sales and special offers and stuff where you can get subs cheaper.
I have heard a lot of people say "I'd like to try it, but the skill system scares me... I heard you just continuesly train skills, even while offline... Which means people that have played for years have way more skills than I do, how am I supposed to compete with that?" - While it is true that other players will have more skill points than you when you first start out, but that's not really a problem. If you stay in High Security space, you will encounter very little to no PvP content overall, so the skill difference doesn't really concern you. You play for yourself and do mostly PvE activities, not much to worry about. If you go into Low and Null Security space, things start to change, but you usually don't go there alone (unless you know what you're doing). If you are interested in PvP, a good idea is to join a corporation that lives in Low or Null sec. It's a good idea to join a corporation in general, especially a new player friendly one that teaches you the game, but it's highly recommended if you want to live in Low Sec, and basically mandatory if you want to live in Null Sec. If you join one of the bigger corps in Eve, they will usually have handouts ready for you or can at least provide you with cheap options you can use for PvP, and these ships are not very skill intensive, and you can do some serious harm with them when part of a fleet. You, with your three day old character in a frigate, can ruin the day for a 12-year vet in a cruiser-size ship. Granted, there's a good chance you die a lot in your frigate, but that's fine, they are easily replaced and every loss will teach you more about the game. In short, don't worry too much about the skill difference, you can still have an impact :)

TL;DR: Try it for free, look for a new player friendly corporation, and just see if you like it. Eve Online is a unique game, there's not really many others like it.

Some new player friendly corporations/alliances include "Eve University" of the "Ivy League" alliance, "KarmaFleet" of the "Goonswarm Federation" alliance, and "Brave Newbies Inc." of the "Brave Collective" alliance.
The objectively best choice for new player friendly corp would be Pandemic Horde Inc. of the Pandemic Horde alliance, but maybe I'm biased because I'm in that alliance as well :)

Once you get the rythm of fighting down, this game feels more like dancing with a sword than fighting.
