In Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, you play as Raiden, a cyborg working for a private military company. Raiden is trying to save the world from a crazy cast of enemies, including other cyborgs, Metal Gears, the Denver police department, and even a US senator. The story is ambitious and to be honest, kind of insane. It also doesn't really make much sense, but it does tie the game together, so I will admit that it does its job successfully. I suppose it is a Kojima game, so this is to be expected, along with the over-the-top characters and the random Codex calls where Doktor mansplains to you about the specific details of the engine of the helicopter you are about to get in.

This game is centered on combat, and the combat is actually very smooth, well-done, and fun. I will admit that some of the controls are a little weird; parrying in particular feels unnatural and I always missed my parries when I was starting out (you have to push the left stick and X at the exact same time).

Since I've brought up the odd controls, I will use this opportunity to complain about them a bit. The controls wouldn't be that bad on their own, but there's also not really a real tutorial in this game besides some crappy VR missions. These missions pretty much go "Ok this is light attack, that's heavy attack, here's blade mode, OK you're good." As you can imagine, this is not really that helpful. Because of the lack of tutorials, the game does a really bad job of educating the player on how to make full use of the tools at their disposal, including parries, dodges, Ninja run, and Zandatsus. In addition, there are many skills Raiden can purchase between missions, but there isn't any information on how to actually use them. The dodge skill is a good example of this; I had to look up a guide to figure out what buttons to push to activate it (it's A + X + left stick in the direction you want to dodge in, btw).

The poorly explained combat system is especially irritating because the game is actually pretty hard. Kojima really throws you in the deep end; in the first level, one of the first fights is a large stealth section with three Gekkos, which are very hard to fight if you don't know what you're doing. You also have to fight the dog boss later in this level, who I still have trouble against after I've completed the game. Once I got my ♥♥♥♥ together though, it was very satisfying to finally complete the level.

Once you get the combat system down, the game is super fun, and just feels good. Raiden slides between enemies effortlessly, hacking and slashing off limbs. There's music pumping in the background as you create a whirlwind of blood, gore, and body parts. When fights go right, you feel like a complete badass. When they go wrong, you know it's your fault, and not the fault of the game; you learn from your mistakes and do better next time. You can pull off some crazy stunts, like going into blade mode while sliding under a cyborg and performing a Zandatsu attack, splitting the cyborg in half. Besides the sword, Raiden has a versatile arsenal, and can pull out all sorts of interesting grenades and launchers to use in combat.

There's also many sections you have the option of approaching with stealth. For some reason, enemies 10 meters from you don't notice you literally exploding a robot with your sword right behind them. Not sure how that works out. However, if you ignore how ridiculous that is, the stealth mechanics are well-done and it's satisfying to complete a section entirely unnoticed, picking off enemies one by one. You can get in Snake's trademark cardboard box (which is apparently impossible for cyborgs to see through with their infrared sight since it is lined with tin foil, lol), wait for enemies to walk past you, and stab them in the back. You can also throw jamming grenades to jam cameras, smoke grenades to sneak through choke points, decoy grenades that create a 3D projection of yourself, and, well you get the idea. When given the option, stealth is also an easy way to one-hit-kill some of the harder enemies, like Mastiffs. If you're spotted (like I often was), you'll have to either fight or run away. I'd usually end up fighting everyone else after a couple stealth kills at the beginning. Of course, picking off a lot of enemies earlier here would have worked to my advantage, as I would have had less enemies to battle once I blew my cover.

Overall, it's a great game. It's challenging and has a unique combat system, but it feels so good to master the combat. The bosses are unique, hard, and you really feel a sense of accomplishment when you beat them. The soundtrack is awesome, and even if the story is kind of all over the place, the over-the-top characters are hilarious. I can honestly say that I appreciate what Kojima is trying to do by including real issues like the war economy, child soldiers, and PMCs -- I guess what I'm trying to say is that the game feels tied together. Most importantly, it's a lot of fun. I just wish there was more of a tutorial for new players like me who were hopelessly lost at the beginning.

A fun story-based game where you play as four different characters. Their narratives intertwine as they investigate the mysterious Origami Killer, a serial killer who leaves origami figures at the scenes of his victims.

The gameplay is all QTEs. I usually hate QTEs, but I found that it's not that bad here for some reason. Maybe it's because QTEs are usually immersion-breaking, but in this case the entire game is based around them, so it doesn't matter as much. Anyway, depending on how well you perform QTEs and choose dialogue options, you can get different outcomes, and if you really mess up, you can even get your characters killed off. The amount of endings and branching is really well done.

Unfortunately, there are a few big negatives as well. For one, the story is not that good, and it has a lot of plot holes. I'm kind of used to bad stories from video games, but it's really jarring in this game due to the fact that the game is essentially an interactive story.

Another big negative is that the voice acting is terrible, especially whatever voice actors they hired to voice the children. It really takes you out of the moment. The voice actor for Jayden sounds like a Swedish person trying to do a Boston accent.

Criticism aside, the game is tense and fun. You really feel a sense of desperation as you scramble to push buttons on your controller, knowing that if you mess up, you might continue the story with one less character. In other games, you'd be greeted with a game over screen and have to start at your last checkpoint. But in Heavy Rain, actions have consequences.

I guess in the end, there isn't much gameplay, and what gameplay there is isn't too hard. But it's an enjoyable game overall.
