Even before I heard others echo the same opinion, I had the clear impression that this game feels like FromSoftware simply used a pseudonym and pretended to be a different company just to make this. Round8 and NeoWiz pulled off something that shouldn't be possible for them, honestly. It's just THAT high in quality - the core formula, down to the feel of movement and animations, is so completely recreated, unlike most other soulslikes (even high budget ones) that stumble and fail to reach the level of polish of FromSoftware's soulsborne series before adding all their twists.

One could feasibly call them copycats for stealing the mechanics so completely, but honestly, in the end it serves to produce a compelling whole, and furthermore, it makes extremely well-considered additions and quality-of-life upgrades to the formula. These new features feel less like what another game might do to differentiate itself in the genre, and more like what FromSoftware themselves would add in a Dark Souls 4 or a Bloodborne 2. 90% of the design is the same, but the new 10% is so carefully planned as to have a huge impact without making the overall feel different. In this category I would think of the ability to recharge from 0 to 1 Estus charges (by landing attacks, a genius addition that creates unrivaled fights), the removal of weapon stat requirements, the ability to split handles and blades to recombine any weapon, the ability to parry/perfect block any attack (albeit with properly difficult timing), and the P-Organ upgrade system (done better than most - it avoids little '5% damage boost' type upgrades, so that even the minor pieces that get slotted in for bigger bonuses are themselves very impactful, like more souls earned or extra flask charges).

Almost every single boss is either excellent or incredible. They look amazing, the fluidity and connectedness of varied animations is equal to or surpassing FromSoftware, and they feel quite difficult yet fair (5 bosses took me 3 to 5 attempts, which felt challenging and required me to rethink my strategy, but I wasn't stuck on them for 15-20 tries like some Souls ones - all the other bosses were 1 or 2 tries). There might be 1 or 2 weak boss fights in the entire game. It doesn't show its best early, but rather maintains the momentum and continues to deliver excellent fights, right up until the end, where the last few fights are among the best in the entire game (much like a Soul of Cinder in Souls). This gives the game a sense of legitimacy, rather than feeling like an indie effort or a first attempt by a fledgling studio. It's not frontloaded, but instead it has the confidence to give you good content early and GREAT content later.

Thanks to the variety enabled by the combat system, my favorite in any soulslike so far, it really engenders multiple playthroughs both to explore more weapon styles and to also just focus on different aspects of combat (blocking vs dodging vs parrying, etc.). There are some cool changes in NG+ as well, very similar to a soulsborne game, and I don't think every NG+/NG++ change is even documented yet. You get surprised with the unlock of an extra P-Organ region in NG+ with entirely new bonuses that go nuts (like ANOTHER accessory slot), and AGAIN another extra P-Organ region in NG++. Higher "+" valued accessories and such drop too. With heavy inspiration from Nier Automata as well, some garbled puppet speech becomes clear in NG+ (it makes sense in the story too, since you still have a decoder you picked up during the last run), and reveals more about the plot to make everything click even more.

Levels are excellent - they're stunning, atmosphere is carefully crafted, and you always feel unsettled thanks to the massive frequency of ambushes and traps, and the creepy ambient creaks of nearby but unseen foes. They all have fantastic looping and shortcuts, though despite that being well-executed, it does become a bit more formulaic rather than surprising, as the overall level system is linear. There isn't any surprise exploration to a new side zone or optional boss, just frequent quality but unsurprising loop-around shortcuts. It all felt like genuine souls regardless, but I felt like mentioning one area that has drawn a little criticism and validating it.

Anyways, more I could type on this, but it's a shockingly good game. It deserves, in my opinion, to be rated with the FromSoftware soulsborne games, and I don't think it's unfair to say it's better than several of them.

I loved the overall plot and message implied in the story. I didn't think I would, but I found the concepts around our main character puppet and what it means to be a puppet versus a human, and how the ability to lie affects that. It was a really good surprise that it was that genuine. It also has incredible respect for its source material, and it is filled with references to the original Pinocchio story.

PLAY IT. If you love any souls games, this is another one. Just play it.
