I can't believe I still haven't write a review for this game, It is, at the same time, one of the best if not the best Alien game, and a very ambitious survival horror ! For a AAA game that sounds almost too good to be true.

It's not perfect, and it's definitely not for everyone (game is difficult and clearly aimed at sci-fi lovers) but damn me it's so good ! I highly recommend to play with the Unpredictable Alien mod, almost a necessity for this game as it makes the Alien much more... unpredictable, and also a lot less anoying at the same time.

Also special mention to the optimization, the game runs like an absolute charm ! Even on old AMD/NVIDIA GPUs !

Simply one of the very best RTS ever made, singleplayer and vs bots and multiplayer.
Don't be fooled by my low time spent into the game, back in the day when it came out, I geeked this game to an insane point.

If ONLY the game was running at 60 FPS...

One of the best game ever made, seriously. Don't listen to people saying it is bad, it's not ! You may need to take some time to remap controls though.

If you have an nvidia GPU enable SGSSAAx8 in inspector and play it with MSAAx8 ingame and nearest textures filter, looks really cool !

The music is amazing but there is no custom MIDI instruments though, makes it sound really bad, that's why I decided to create a dedicated soundfont for it ! Mod is still WIP as for now but not for much time hopefully.

Mod is finished, get my custom dedicated soundfont here !

This has to be seriously one of my biggest disappointment when it comes to survival horror. I really enjoyed the first Outlast for what it was, but this one is missing on so many points... It has it's moments though, and I could have chose this review to be a positive one, because of the superb realisation and performance of the game, even with all the little things I don't like in it, but I just can't, because of one thing : The story.

The story in this game, without trying to spoil it, is one of the worst stories ever concieved in an horror game. It is cliche to an extreme cringe level, and feels like a list of checkmarks from start to finish. gore ? check. religious fanatism ? check. sexual disorder ? check. rape ? check. murder ? check. The characters are completely uninteresting and the plot, while indeed related to the first Outlast by EXTREMELY OBSCURE LINKS (I insist, you are basically FORCED to go to the internet to read the explanation), just makes you unconfortable, but not for the right reasons. Not far into the game, you just want it to finish. Outlast 1 had far from perfect gameplay but the story was pretty interesting, at least in my opinion, and Wistleblower was a nice addition to it. This just feels blank and boring.

And the gameplay, while having very interesting ideas (the fact that you can lock certain doors, hide at a lot of spots, open/close windows, crawl, etc.. and the microphone mechanic), it just doesn't exploit them, or at very scripted and forced moments, which is a shame because you can feel they really tried to make a good game here.

To finish, and I think it may be my biggest complain after the story, the game is just not scary at all ! I counted the times I have been scared during the entire game, and it was 3 ! With 2 being jumpscares ! The only legit time were I was really scared was a part very well done in the school were for reasons I won't spoil I was legitimately terrified to look behind me, but that was the only moment in the entire game !

Well.. You got it. I didn't enjoy the game. The problem with Outlast 2, is that there are now so many better horror games released yet, why pick this one ? When you can play Cry of Fear (for free), Alien: Isolation, and even Resident Evil 7 which I didn't really enjoy but is definitely much better. And the list just goes on. It's one of the finest examples of too little too late.

I'll still follow Red Barrels devs because I think the team is talented, they just need to know where they are going from now on. No, the walking simulator full of scripts, distorted music, and lacking in ambition/true difficulty with cliche story for saturday night with your friends doesn't work anymore. At least It doesn't work for me. Yes they can do that, but I am convinced they can do much much better than this. And I hope this is the path they will choose :)

Think Resident Evil 4 but MUCH MUCH worse.
The sequel is better though.
Just play the sequel, you're not missing out on this one.
Also, beware the game is TERRIBLY optimized, and you are going to need a very strong GPU -AND- CPU to run it great if you are targeting 60 FPS due to the absence of true exclusive fullscreen mode, leaving the framepacing to be a prey of the windows desktop composition forced vsync, unless you have a Gsync / freesync monitor and in this case you are lucky.

Well, it's touhou 16, and it's on steam, so I recommend it.

More seriously, I'm new to the series, but I've heard a LOT about this game for a long time now, but it's more than just a difficult arcade game with a bullethell shoot'em up design and superb music, it's the experience, the blending of it all that procures an amazing sensation of video game symbiosys while you play it.

I can understand it may sound obscure, but it is to be experienced, really.

$15 is maybe a bit much though. But nothing I will really complain about.

Well, that's kind of an easy call for this one, of course I'm not recommending it.

Stupid game old like my grandma, same gameplay (maybe even worse at some points) since 1999, engine is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ outdated (good old Source 1 with only DX9 lol, I guess the game isn't successful enough to update the engine)

Server performance is terrible, at 40 ping, you shot someone and then you have like 15 frames before he dies from the headshot you just pulled off, a lot of very shameful bugs too that I won't be listing here.

Game is NOT based on skill, but on communication (which is a good thing in theory but not enough people communicate), on RNG (a LOT of RNG actually), and over the top artificial weapon spread knowledge. What is this? A math exam? Are you kidding me? I long the good old days of Unreal Tournament and Quake, those were real competitive FPS games, this one feels like you are calling voodoo magic when you want your weapon to shoot right.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, now that CS2 is out, everything said above still stands, except that the game is less ugly now.

I'm sorry, but no, I don't recommend DOOM (2016).

I hesitated a LOT before writing this, and actually, DOOM (2016) is really not a bad game far from it, absolutely NOT worth $60 of course, but I got it for $15, but even, I feel the need to lower that 91% and all the praise the game had from the "professional reviewers".

No, DOOM (2016) is NOT a great First Person Shooter. Yes if you compare it to modern CODs (which are not FPS but MMS actually) the game is the best FPS ever made, but if you compare it to DOOM 1 or 2 or even 3 (which does a lot of things better actually) or Quake 1 or 2 or Unreal or Painkiller or even Wolfenstein the new order and the old blood or the metro series or half life or duke nukem 3D or (insert a huge list of good FPS games here) the game falls short, VERY short.

But it could have still be a positive review even if it is obviously inferior to the classics in many ways, but it won't be.

The game TRIES, and only for that, I wanted to give it a good review. It TRIES SO HARD to be a great FPS game, it tries to be fast, it tries to be visually impressive, it tries to have powerful weapons, it tries to have good music, it tries to have good level design, but it ONLY TRIES.

The movement speed, while still being superior to many productions is still too slow, the strafe speed and strafe reaction is SO painful, especially when you are coming from quake or unreal or a lot of other FPS games actually, you have the feel that you are controlling a slow ass big badass in armor, and it works with Halo, but not here...

The engine holds the potential of the game SO MUCH, it is actually inferior to ID Tech 5 in certain areas such as texture streaming speed potential (vt_maxPPF is limited to 64 !! it is twice slower than Wolfenstein TNO !!) The texutres are SO inequal, you really travel in time with this game, it can go as high as your best skyrim texture mod, and as low as half life 1 itself ! and this is frequent. I wouldn't have complained if it didn't require a 5 GB+ (WTF !!!!!) GPU to enable Nightmare textures, which I have (gtx 1060 6GB) so yes I do run the game at absolute max settings, even with supersampling actually. The antialiasing options are reduced to either nothing, or terrible looking post process solutions, yes, EVEN TSSAA, it looks like ♥♥♥♥ and creates a lot of visual artefacts, not mentioning it creates a huge latency on lighting and reflections in scene composition. Details some might say, but details that matters. The SSAO implementation is also atrocious with grind pattern artefacts, and lens flares have bleeding on the border of the lens flare image.

The weapons, when they are not upgraded, are terribly weak, and when they are, it is maybe one of the worst balancing I ever saw in a supposedly good FPS game. You basically just use super shotgun and gauss rifle, pretty much anything else sucks big time. They even managed to make my favourite weapon, the plasma rifle, a pain to use due to a reduction in mouse movement when you hold fire, NEVER DO THIS THIS IS TERRIBLE GAME DESIGN !!

The music, it might be personal taste, but it is so bad that I had to force me during the whole playthrough to not turn it off, and usually I like experimental stuff and especially I LOVED Mick Gordon in a lot of his previous work, what happened here ?? this is great music : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGK1dr-Ql0w yup. But in addition of being pretty bad, it is integrated in such a repetitive and unnorganic way, that it makes it really painful to hear, they are ways of making repetitive experimental music, just listen at Drakengard 1 OST for instance, it works. DOOM 2016 OST just.. doesn't, at least for me. I give credit to some of the tracks and ambient themes, but for the most part it just sounds like dubstep on crack.

The level design... so restrictive, DOOM 1 2 3 feels like open world RPGs compared to this. Yes the envorionements are larger but somewhat they managed to make them feel a lot more linear that they first look like. It is arena to arena, just like Painkiller, actually a LOT of things in this game are similar to Painkiller but done worse/much worse (all of them). I wanted to make a list but it will be too long and I don't want to focus on "this game is inferior to this game". Just keep in mind that the game will have, almost meaningless ressource management and map exploration since loot ennemies give adapts to your condition (low on hp or ammo ? you'll get a ton more, even on hardest difficulties) and it is not the secrets that can change that, very restrictive and linear LD with a lot of invisible walls or ungrabable corners, which in the end discourages exploration. EXTREMELY ARTIFICIAL DIFFICULTY in ultra-violence and nightmare with completely incoherent damage (a slap from a weak zombie will deal as much HP as a rocket fired by a big monster ???). The environements, minus some of them, feels completely soulless, the art direction of UAC is correct but hell looks a lot worse than DOOM 3 hell level (which was amazing it's a bit of an unfair comparison I admit). And... the gameplay... it never really grabs on, even with the cool runes system, it only gets a bit angry at the end but thats all, it's never hard and when it is, it's just because the enemies deal more damage regarding the difficulty you choose or the fact that you are so slow that you can't evade that's all. The pacing is way too inconsistent and the arenas are short and doesn't feel good, play Painkiller you'll totally see what I mean. I could continue on the gameplay, game design, or level design a lot longer, i'll just stop here, and finish with the fact that the RPG progression system was a terrible idea and is at the complete opposite of the DOOM spirit, you don't become the doomguy, you ARE the doomguy. Romero would not be proud. This was clearly made to please the console audience and not shock them too hard with a powerful and fast FPS game, and also to really artificially improve the disapointing lentgh of the game.

I don't know what to say more. Impossible to mod the game ? Above mediocre multiplayer component ?

DOOM 2016 is not a bad game, but it is an average game, and a little one, it is not a big game at all. It is worth only if you can pick it at <= $15 like I did, and if you have a powerful computer.

What can I say ? disapointing really :s I know a lot of people liked the game, I'd be interested to hear what you think of it.

Everything ported from a console is designed to crash.
We are perpetually trapped...
in a never-ending spiral of terrible PC ports.
Is this a curse?
Or some kind of punishment?
I often think about the developer who betrayed us with this cryptic optimization...
and wonder if we'll ever have the chance to kill it.

Nier automata is the best game ever made since 2008, but the PC port is a shame.
No updates in a month and more, waiting patches to change review to positive.

EDIT: It's been a YEAR and still NO official fixes for the game's problems. FAR works well but it's not at the community to do you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ lazy job. The texture mod is also very good and vaslty improves the look of the game in my opinion.

EDIT 2: Well, 3 years and still no updates, hopefully the situation gets better with RepliCant...
At least there is a lot of cool mods to play with now.

EDIT 3: The game finally got updated officially and works much better, and now mod support allows multithreaded loadings on NVMe drives that takes less than 1 second, much better textures, much higher resolution shadows and shadows on grass and props, much higher LODs, and gameplay at uncapped framerate. -> https://youtu.be/cuygHuGNkww

Despite the game still being quite heavy on the GPU, with good hardware it is now possible to have great visuals and decent performance, I am then changing my review to positive to reflect these changes.

If you have a good GPU (GTX 1070 for 1080p | GTX 1080 Ti / RTX 2070 for 1440p), it is absolutely worth it now, even if you don't like J-RPGs / slashers.
