The Hippopotamus is the world’s third largest land animal after the elephant and the rhino. The name hippopotamus means ‘river horse’ and is often shortened to hippo. It has thick skin with huge rounded body on stubby legs. Its feet have 4 webbed toes. It can open mouth very wide. It is herbivores and eats mostly grass. It can grow up to 10 feet long, 5 feet high at the shoulder, and weigh 7000 pounds. Hippopotamuses spend a large amount of time in water such as rivers, lakes and swamps. A male hippo is called bull and female called cow. A baby hippo is called a calf. Hippos often live in large groups of up to 40 hippos.A group of hippos is usually called a bloat, pod, or herd.
